Tom on Tues Nov. 18/08

November 18th, 2008 by Tom

My apologies. Haven’t blogged in over a week. Lots of stuff. Here we go.

..great fun taking over the theatre at Grant Park, the Empire for our screening of the new Bond flick yesterday afternoon. Thanks to Nick and Kelly there for having us and some of you who I may have met there. Love this guy Craig as Bond. How about you? I’ve heard lots of opinions, but I love the gritty version that he portrays. Very cool character. Brought Riley along…he loved it too.

Can’t remember if I mentioned that kids are back at hockey and ringette now. Saw Shay play with the Rivermen in the senior men’s leaque last week. Really good hockey……really enjoyed it.
Also Rory decided to get back at it. 16-18year old A-1 out of Selkirk. Going to see him again at Pioneer tomorrow night. Glad to see him go out for one more season.
His band, Yesterday’s Kings, will be featured again on Howard’s night at Saffrons this Thurs, if you want to drop by and see a great young band. (Of course I’m a proud papa!)
And Little J is just flying out there with her Norberry/Glenlee ringette squad. We usually can be found at Bertrand arena, their home indoor rink. I love watching them play….so much fun, and funny too. And I finally figured out how their offside rule works.
My own Fri hockey continues, with one of the great collection of loogans ever assembled. Friday afternoon at Dakota and then wings and beer and bad jokes afterward. The boys usually step up for each goal i get for our annual Bed In, so I better pick up my pace soon, I’m on a three week drought.

The Bed In goes Mon Dec 15 to Wed 17th, back at the Forks….530am to 10pm daily.Hope to see everyone there. Joe and I do our show, and then drop in with the other guys throughout the day. Thanks in advance for all your usual generosity.

Looking forward to heading out to Special K’s parents for American Thanksgiving next week. Flying out Thurs morn. As, I’m sure you know, it’s huge down there, so it should be cool. Special’s family were pulling for the republicans in the election, as they always do, including my wife, but it doesn’t mean they won’t feed a guy who wanted to see Obama get in will it? ….All kidding aside, they’re great people, including GG, great grandma, coming in from Boise, home of none other than Ryan Dinwiddie!! I’m bringing my hockey equiptment to wear when we head out to Christmas shop the sales the next day on the famous Black Friday!

Coach Berry of the Bombers……Gone……always thought he was a bit of an oddball quite frankly….I like the choice of Mike Kelly, which appears to be a slam dunk.
We’ll have him on the show as soon as it’s announced. Glad to see Brendan Taman has been retained as well. I think he did a great job of getting good players, then handed them to Berry, who screwed them up.

Really proud that Citifm received the CAB National Gold Ribbon award for getting the new Feb holiday for Manitoba, but it was really all of you who should get the award for making it happen by joining our online petition…..1 week, 30,000 people, made Gary and Nancy et all on Broadway listen up. Fantastic.

AC/DC Tom and Joe World Tour draw is this Fri. LA, with the concert a hockey and basketball game……great trip….get your ballots in…

When Obama gets around to getting the kids that puppy, they should get a bassett hound. We have a ton of laughs every day with Boomer, our long eared, stumpy legged beauty.

Had a great time today hosting Diane Phillips and her husband and friends at our monthly Bellisimo lunch today. Log on to the website, and sign up for the all access vip club and we’ll see you for lunch

The plan is to put the Christmas lights up tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted.
Mom’s birthday this Thurs. She’ll be 81. Still as cool as ever.

hear from you in the morn…..

The National Drunk by Joe

November 17th, 2008 by Joe

Rum O’clock officially hits Grey Cup Sunday! We will be live starting at noon from Boston Pizza on Kenaston.  Kick-off is officially set for 5:00.  We will have plenty of prizes to give away if you would like to join us.  Should be a great game.  The league has to be happy that the two top teams are playing for the championship.  Of course, one being the hometown team, which will help hype the game in Montreal.  The two best QBs this year will be featured as well.  I am taking Calgary in the upset, but I think the game will be close. Either way, we are going to throw a big party at Boston Pizza!

I watched the UFC PPV on Saturday night and wasn’t surprised that Brock Lesnar defeated Randy Couture.  The former WWE Superstar is alot bigger, stronger and younger than the MMA Hall of Famer.  Alot of fans were saying that Lesnar didn’t deserve a title shot because of the amount of fights he’s had.  Well, that is probably true, but Dana White and the UFC were just doing business, not worried about records…  well, only pay-per-view records.  UFC is trying to grow their audience with more mainstream fans (some from pro wrestling).

Speaking of UFC, on their Ultimate Fighter TV show, local star Krystoff Sochynski made mention of Winnipeg on the show this past week. He has done well on the show.  Good luck to him the rest of the way, as he is trying to lock up a contract with the UFC.

Winnipeg was also a topic of discussion because of “The Office” this past week.  The show featured Steve Carrell’s character coming to Winnipeg for a conference.  There was so much hype arounfd the “Peg” thing, it left me kind of disappointed.  The show itself was fine, but I was hoping for more Winnipeg in it.

Have a great day!

What a Week from Joe

November 14th, 2008 by Joe

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who sent cards, called or emailed wondering about my wife, who had some preventive surgery last week.  She is at home and doing fine, so thanks again for all your support.  I would also like to thank Dr. Popowich and the whole staff  on the 5th floor at the HSC Women’s Hospital for taking good care of her.

It was sad to see the Bombers lose the home playoff game to Edmonton last Saturday, and of course that led to some restructuring in managment with the Big Blue, including the firing of Coach Doug Berry.  My personal choice for head coach would be Mike Kelly, who is an old friend that is passionate about the CFL and this city.  It would definitely put Bomber fans in a comfort zone knowing that a former assistant would come back as “the Man.”  By the way I like Montreal (even though it always seems hard for the Grey Cup hosting city to have their team make it to the big game) to face Calgary in the final. You can join me for my Grey Cup Party at Boston Pizza on Kenaston Sunday, Nov. 23rd.

Here’s a couple of NFL upsets for pro-line this weekend.  I’m going to take Jacksonville to beat Tennessee and Seattle at home to beat Arizona.  Sunday night’s game could be interesting with Dallas (and the return of Tony Romo) in Washington to face the Redskins (without Clinton Portis apparently).  I like the tie for proline in that one.

Good luck and have a great weekend!

Tom on Thurs. Nov 7th

November 6th, 2008 by Tom

Thurs already! I don’t know where time goes. I thought we set the clocks back an hour, not forward a few days!

Let’s see, since I last blogged, a weekend flew by and most of a week.

An election, as well. No, not ours, I definitely missed that. The presidential one. Obama’s election. Pretty cool to see history in the making. It sure will be interesting to see how he does in office. I like the guy. Sure going to miss Tina Fey doing the hilarious impersonation of Sarah Palin though.

Did you get a flu shot. My wife, Special K, asked me yesterday. My response, as always, being the stubborn old Irish guy. No, I don’t get them, cuz I don’t get sick. Then she reminded me that they advise kids and older people over 50 to get them. Ouch! Well, I still feel like a kid, and act like one half the time, so maybe I should get one.

Had a great chat on air this morn with Kelly Malveaux from the Bomber’s Defence. He was lots of fun. We’re now led to believe that KK may be stalking him. Check out the interview on the audio portion of the Tom and Joe page on our website. Tomorrow morn in the 8am hour, we’ll have Zeke”and destroy”Moreno with us. And another bonus code for tickets for Saturday’s game. Forcast minus 2 and snow flurries, windy………Perfect…it’ll be great…I’ll be up in Sec 9 with Keenan as usual.Btw..nice to see kicker Serna get the Special teams award this week. Remember, a couple of weeks ago, I predicted we were going to need that leg at a crucial time this Sat. and looks like he’s ready.

Our winner, Gay Pagen called from the rock and roll fantasy camp in London. She was calling from Abby Road studios with Bowie’s guitarist Earl Slick. Having an incredible time. Listen to the interview on our page as well.AC/DC in LA Tom and Joe World Tour is open for ballots now.

Cell phone ban in cars. Yes, I agree. But now have to find that earpiece my phone came with 2 years ago…..where did I put that?

Joe’s away for a couple of days as Allanah has some preventative surgery. She should be calling us anytime to please take him back.

We’re booking Kenny Shields to come in and chat and play for us next Monday morn. He plays that night for his annual gig. Don’t miss him with us in the morn. It’ll be great. Look for his new compilation album out too. All the details on Monday’s show.

Traffic will be crazy in the morn if this weather front hits with all the ice-rain, snow pellets, hail, snow, wind etc. We’ll be on top of it for you. I think I’m still a kid, I’m looking forward to some wintery weather. Went to the shed and got the windshield scrappers out and put them in the cars last night……bring it on!

Hear from you in the morning.

Where do these weeks go?
Our boss Zarbs turns 50 this week, and at the potluck the staff threw for her today, I was telling her how fast time seemed to speed up for me, shortly after I turned 40, that was a decade ago now!!…..Anyway….happy 50th to Gayle. Welcome to the club.

And Happy Halloween…….that snuck up too….maybe since we’ve had pretty nice weather for October…doe’sn’t it usually snow on halloween…..Little J is going out as a mad scientist…should be hilarious…..even Keenan says he and his buds might still go out…..as Joe says, they’ll go out, until they’re legal age to drink beer!
Love having the little kids come to the door but don’t get too many anymore. Special K is flying in late, so will miss Little for the first time at Halloween. I’m in charge of getting the pictures of her in costume. Better take a few just to make sure!!

Once that’s done, it’ll be Christmas planning time. Btw, look for the new Wpg Men magazine out soon…it’s the holiday, Nov/Dec issue, and Joe and I write about the holiday season for our ‘last word’ article.

Had a monster 3hour road hockey game last Sat. on our street. I just love that. Kids and adults mix. One of many to come throughout the winter.

Bought our tickets for the Bombers playoff game. Should be exciting. And I love a Saturday afternoon game. I don’t know why, but I do. Superfan Keen, passed on going to the Hamilton game this weekend.

Glad to see the Free Press and their employees settled their differences and will be back tomorrow. I missed reading it and the National Post everyday.

Gas prices coming down….nice
Canadian dollar way down as well….not so nice

Had a riot on the show this week with Joe following his dreams and delivering chips to stores on the Frito Lay truck….and then of course getting fired for giving away and eating too many chips…..completely stupid and funny to me…..hope to you too

everyone taking sides about Celine Dion this week…love her or hate her…..fact is she had two sold out shows, and our son Shay tells us one of the biggest stages they have ever set up at Mts Centre…..!

should have listened to Joe’s Dad, Rockin’ Ralph….still too early for Christmas oranges….bought a box, cuz you gotta love them, but still too sour…..got to wait to later in November…….

Talked to Dave from Winnipeg band Inward Eye, on the road opening for the Who.
What a great break for a great band. Remember, they opened here for them a couple of years ago. And the Who remembered too! Fantastic.

Congrats to Focus Fitness, Train like a pro winners. And met Jeff, from Focus…nice guy….until he gets you in the gym and puts the hurt on. Sure gets results though.

finally…..here’s to listener Gilbert who called and said he got his hands on his own busboard of Joe and I and all the rock legends in the group shot……..no we didn’t make them available on the vip club yet, he just walked up to a bus that had stopped and took it………we don’t recommend the practice, but thought it was pretty hilarious…….

hear from you in the morning……

Tom on Tues Oct 21st

October 21st, 2008 by Tom

Still hanging on to some pretty nice weather for the middle of October!
Especially like walking Boom, our Bassett, this time of year in St. Vital park. It’s more of a sniff-fest for him than an exercise walk, as he’s nose to the ground the whole way.

Following up on my last dispatch. I did watch about 45 minutes of the last Presidential debate and was either bored, or got tired about hearing about Joe the Plumber……anyway, turned away. That can end anytime soon thank you.

On our side of the border, it did end for the Liberals. Dion steps down as Liberal leader. Well, I guess! He got out before the mutiny that would have tossed him out anyway. One of the least inspiring leaders of any party that I have seen in a long long time. If it wasn’t for the economy souring during the last two weeks of the election, I think Harper could have achieved his majority, thanks mostly to Dion’s weaknesses as an alternative…..As Joe likes to call them ‘mungy cake’ people….alittle too soft for the leadership role…I always thought Cretien(sp?) was an arrongant sob, but at least he was a ‘leader’.

Saw Rory’s band ‘Yesterday’s Kings’ at the Pyramid last Fri. They opened for their friends Lucid, who were holding a cd release party. I love watching them play. Of course, I’m a proud papa, but these kids are good, and pour everything they have into it, as it should be.
Very entertaining. I’ll let you know when they play again and you can judge for yourself.

On the topic of musicians, regards to the family of our friend, Andrew Shefchyk, of Boston Pizza, who just lost their brother Paul to cancer. Many of you will be familiar with his work with such local bands as Dorian Grey and Heartland. Thoughts and prayers for Andrew and the family.

If you like a great live band, how about AC/DC in LA?!!…It’s the latest Tom and Joe World Tour for you and THREE of your friends/family!!!….Yeah a trip for four to LA with Lakers and Kings games thrown in. Enter through the all access vip club on our website. Not a member?…You gotta take a minute and sign up ….it’s incredible…..

Bombers, as everyone knows, played like crap in Calgary, EXCEPT for Serna the kicker. It shouldn’t be lost on us that he kicked FG’s from 48 yds TWICE and one from 47. That’s huge!! Mark my words…..that Nov 8th playoff game, will come down to kicking in the wind and cold, and this kid could be the hero that day. Who would have thought?

Today’s Tom and Joe Top 5….’Potentially useless Pets’ ..list arose in discussion after guy got bit in the face by his venomous python……I just don’t get the snake people…..I guess it’s cool to have a venomous one in your stable, until he attaches himself to your face!!!
Btw….when I last checked, the Stick bug was leading the votes…hilarious…..go to the polls page on the vip club to vote til 6 tomorrow morn and get 100 points for doing so.

hope to hear from you tomorrow morn…..

Joe’s Weekend Sports Thoughts

October 20th, 2008 by Joe

Wow, what a busy sports weekend!  Locally you had the Moose and Bison teams playing at home.  Plus, you had the Bombers on the road.  The Big Blue got word before their game in Calgary that they were guaranteed a home playoff game after Toronto lost to Montreal.  However, we came out very flat against the Stamps and the team didn’t look good at all.  There have been rumors flying around that alot of our regulars will rest for the next two games and get ready for the playoffs.  I don’t know how you can rest alot of guys when the team hasn’t been playing “playoff intense football”.  I know you risk injuries when your star players play, but don’t you risk not having any team rythym when you sit guys?  Plus, let’s get Joe Smith and Fred Reid back running the ball.  It worked against Toronto!

The World Series is now set after Tampa Bay defeated Boston in 7 games.  Man, that young Rays team is going to be good for a long time.  They did what alot of people said they couldn’t.  They regained their composure and showed no fear to win the ALCS.  Should be a good World Series between Philly and the Rays.  Something different anyway.  Could see a ton more homeruns.

I liked the UFC Free For View on Spike TV this past weekend.  Michael Bisping looked very good in his fight from his homeland.  I’m really looking forward to this Saturday’s PPV featuring Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote.  I hope the Canadian kid can come up with the upset.  Cote has a strong chin and can land a hell of a punch.  hey, who knows, in MMA funny things have happened.

Another weird week in the NFL.  St. Louis wins big over Dallas.  Oakland in overtime with a  50 something yard field goal beat the Jets.  Green Bay looked really good in beating the Colts. Actually looking forward to the Monday nighter tonight with Denver in New England.  I like the Broncos in the upset.  They are paying $3.05 on Proline.

Have a great day!

Election fever………I guess everyone expected the result…..minority gov’t again, but some interesting changes in some ridings…..mine is St. boniface…..ex cop Glover gets in…..promises to get to Ottawa to fight crime on the streets……..I like the image of the cop kicking a little ass in parliament.

Final presidential debate tonight…..I find them very entertaining…….I’ll watch….

Kids update…….Little J has started ringette again……she just loves the socializing with the girls in the room….it’s hilarious….Ed and Shannon are a great coach/manager combo…and Special K will be a bench mom this year! Going to be a great season.

……Keenan has started some acting classes at MTYP in the forks…..he loves it. Got to admit, never saw that coming, but then my Mom reminded me tonight, that I was really shy as a kid, then decided to get into radio, and haven’t shut up since!

…Rory’s band, Yesterday’s King’s are playing at the Pyramid this Fri, opening up for the Lucid cd release party….should be a blast.

…Riley toils away at Sciences at U of M, while cooking up your meals at Earls on Pembina.

…Shay will be setting up and tearing down stages for Neil Young tomorrow at the MTS center

….and Derek’s latest bartending stop is at Smitty’s in Selkirk…..if you’re in the area, drop in, he’s one of the nicest, most entertaining bartenders you’ll meet, and that’s not just his Dad bragging…..he’s quite the character….

Special K is back on the road this week in LA…..we managed to keep her here for 3 weeks in a row, but she escaped us on thanksgiving day….!….hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving……we actually move our big dinner spread to Grey Cup weekend and combine the two with the family, so we had a nice pork dinner this weekend……..

Great fun at the Bomber game last Fri with Keenan. I was on the phone for the better part of the game with Fri hockey buddy, goalie, Bobby Sac, at the annual fantasy draft, getting advice on picks from Keenee, our resident expert. It was hilarious, we couldn’t hear each other….Bobby was shouting at me for picks….the bombers won of course, and I’m sure we’ll somehow come dead last in the hockey draft……btw…..poor Don Mathews….he does not look very healthy…..

….hey…look for a new feature we’ve started…..Tom and Joe’s Top 5….the list on just about anything…just about everyday…your vote is worth 100 all access points ….go to polls in the Vip club on the website, and next day, the results are posted on the Tom and Joe page. If you have a suggestion for a Top 5, just let us know…..

…Great fun giving away the Rock and Roll fantasy camp, Tom and Joe world tour this morning…..winner Gaye Pagen freaked out……she’ll have the trip of a lifetime……btw….beers of the world showcase, Tom and Joe world tour, goes this Fri morn…one more day to get ballots in…..Then….this weekend your shot at the Tom and Joe world tour to ACDC in Toronto…..

Wpg Free Press employees on the picket line……love to see them get settled up with Christmas around the corner….no one wants to see families going through that at that time of year…..

and Ringo Starr announces he doesn’t want any more fan mail…….has no time for it, and will throw it in the garbage if he continues to receive it…….Hello Ringo….you lucked into the greatest rock gig of all time…….be humble…..you still have time to salvage your stupidity….tell us you were just kidding……we just had our Thanksgiving, but American thanksgiving comes up in November………still time to get down on your knees and thank God for everything you have been blessed with…….

hear from you in the morn…..

What a Weekend!

October 14th, 2008 by Joe

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving Long Weekend, and you don’t have enough turkey leftovers to last you for another week.  Nowadays, with most people having two different Thanksgiving dinners, it’s hard to run another 7 days on more turkey.  I’ve had my fill til Christmas.  The nice thing this past weekend was not only plenty of food, but plenty of sports!

It all started with a big Bomber win on Friday night aginst the Argos.  I know it wasn’t the greatest team performance, but here are the positives.  1) The Bombers won   2) The running game/Offensive line was spectacular   3) The defensive line put alot of pressure on Kerry Joseph.  Now on to Calgary!

There were alot of upsets this Sunday and Monday on the NFL schedule this weekend as well.  How about St. Louis and Cleveland both winning.  Even the Vegas oddsmakers are having a hard time figuring out the betting lines.  Which means guys like me aren’t having much luck on my football prolines.

Like any good gambler though, it’s no time to quit! I have had some luck on baseball the last couple of weeks.  Even though I’m a Red Sox fan, you have to be impressed with this young Tampa Bay team.  There is no fear in these young guys.  The Phillies are looking good as well, congrats to Pat Gillick, a great baseball mind, who still has time to promote the game in Canada.

Election day today and some tight races locally to follow.  Should make for some compelling TV tonight.  I wasn’t really revved up about this election until the last couple of days, but now geared up about seeing what goes down. I still think we end up with a minority government.

Start curling tomorrow night with a few of the boys so I’m looking forward to a few rums and pulled hamstrings.   I haven’t thrown a rock in a few years, not that I was ever good to begin with, but I love the game. Plus, curling isn’t a national past time for my people.  If you brought up curling to most Italians we would think you were talking about your hair.

Have a great short week!

Tom….Tues Oct. 7th

October 7th, 2008 by Tom

lots going on…..Joe’s Social was great fun at Blush…..great to see a lot of you out there supporting breast cancer research…..as many of you know, Joe’s family has been knee deep in fighting it, with his Mom Farina and wife Alanna……..when Little J heard this, she dedicated her Terry Fox run to them and went out and raised $120 in honour of them. Of course when Joe heard, he chipped in 20.

Sad news……our family lost a great great friend in Mr. John Rogers this week. He had been battling throat cancer for some time, but collapsed recently suffering severe head trauma, from which he never recovered. Very sad. Mr Rogers was one of the great characters I have ever met and had the pleasure of knowing. When our family moved to Caracas rd. in Toronto, when I was 12, the Rogers resided across the street. Mr and Mrs, and all 9 kids!
There were six of us and 7 Kahnert boys down the street. What a great street. And Mr. Rogers was the self appointed mayor. No one ever objected. We all loved him. He’d spend hours convincing us and subsequently our kids of the brilliance of the Detroit Red Wings. Once Rory announced he was a Wings fan, he quickly became a favorite upon our visits. Our parents were best of friends. My brother Pat married their daughter Mary. The families were untied forever. My Dad, who passed away a few years ago now, and Mr.Rogers, referred to each other as Mr. Perfect and Mr. Wonderful…..yeah they were both fun goofballs like that, and now they can hang together again, so there is a bit of a happy ending. My regret, is being in radio ratings at the moment , and unable to attend the service this Thurs in Toronto. But he and the family are in my thoughts and prayers always. Goodbye Mr. Rogers, you were the best…..say hello to Dad.

On to other random thoughts…..I mentioned Little J running in the Terry Fox….she’s also doing the school’s cross country program, and I just love to see that determination on her face coming down to the finish trying to get one of those top 20 ribbons……it’s hilarious and impressive at the same time.

….Bought my first grey cup pull tickets this week….is it that time already?….won 50 bucks last year, so we’re on a roll…..btw….I think Bombers and Toronto will be close this Fri…If you’re there and sitting near the Argo bench, say hello to Don Mathews for us….the man does not look well, and one more loss may do it for him…..

..Presidential debate on tonight…think I’ll just watch the headlines…caught the VP debate last week looking for the train wreck, but only saw two people spouting rhetoric and generalities….very boring……..
…and still struggling over which party to vote for here at home….I don’t think it was the right time to call an election here in the first place….the campaigns have been lame in my opinion

….the guy who chopped off that poor fellows head on the greyhound bus is apparently ‘fit’ to stand trial??!!…….what ‘reality’ show are we watching now…..guy should be put in a mental hospital forever!!….period…..the poor family of the victom shouldn’t be insulted further by a graphic public trial.

…ah the washing machine debacle at home…….tried to unplug the drain because of a small backup when the washing machine would drain…forgot to put the draining hose back in…started a load and proceeded to flood half the basement……..absolute stupidity…I have said a million times, even when I try to fix the simplest thing, it’s an unmitigated disaster…..but I never learn…….thanks to my buddy Scotty the Plumber for all his help…..should have called him in the first place according to Special K……..good advice….

……finally got around to corralling Riley and celebrating his 21st birthday with a dinner at Earls tonight. His birthday was in August, so we were only a few weeks late! All the kids are so busy these days, it’s hard to nail them down.

Keenan has now started acting lessons……..I think it may be a release valve to prepare for another hockey season, as being a Leaf fan can’t be easy. Or he’s just witnessed his dad being such a ‘bad actor’ for so many years that he thought he might investigate how the good one’s do it…..actually he just discovered theatre this year in high school and instantly loved it……..I think he’ll be great…..

….love to hear your comments….and hear from you in the morn on the show…..
