Water Please - No Popsicles

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Get ready for some early cold-pains.

That’s what 660News Meteorologist David Spence is telling me.

I’m running in the Melissa’s Road Race this weekend.

David says it’ll be chilly at the start… cold enough to hurt my teeth as I huff-and-puff my way through Banff.

David’s warning kind of reminds me of 5:00 AM pratices when I played midget hockey. It took weeks before our coach noticed we brought warm water with us to the bench.

Here’s hoping the water stations during the run have heating elements inside the Gatorade containers… if not I may be licking popsicles instead of chugging H2O.

(don’t forget to look for your bonus word and to enter it for points)

A new respect for women… and heels

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

An open comment to any woman who regularly wears high heels: you are crazy!

There is nothing sane about cramming your toes into a tiny pocket, putting all of the weight of your body on those toes, and then walking around while balancing your heel on a long stick.

I experienced that yesterday for the first time - along with about 150-other men - as part of the Cardel Walk a Mile in Her Shoes charity fundraiser.

We all put on a brave face… squeezed into our shoes… and walked around Olympic Plaza - twice

Then we took off our shoes and experienced a sensation like no other as the blood began flowing into our toes again.

Yeesh. All that in the name of fashion.

Cudos to all women who wear heels.

And cudos to organizers who put together the fun event raising money for the YWCA Cardel Crisis Housing Fund.

I will wear red stilettos… help me raise cash for charity!

I’m pumped and raring to go… I’ve also booked my phsyiotherapy appointment just in case.

On Monday… I will try to walk in high heels (yes… I’m hoping they’re from Manolo Blahnick).

I’m doing it for charity… Cardel’s Walk A Mile in Her Shoes… in support of the YWCA.

It’s a fundraiser so every bit counts.

Here’s how you can donate:

Here’s to raising thousands of dollars… and to not breaking my ankle.

Cormac MacSweeney, Dave Will and Nick Taylor from 660News are also walking… so feel free to support them too!

I need your help!! It’s for charity!!

One week from today I will be wearing high heels.

Red. Size 12. Extra wide.

No… I will not be shaving my legs.

I’ll try to walk in those heels without hurting myself.

Why? For charity… Cardel’s Walk A Mile in Her Shoes… in support of the YWCA.

Every bit counts… so here’s how you can give:

That’s it!

I won’t be the prettiest walker - so why not help me raise the most money.

Common Sense DOES Exist in Politics

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

The Green Party’s Elizabeth May WILL get to play when other Canadian political leaders debate on October 2nd.

As she should.

May was originally shut-out… because other leaders said they would boycott the televised debate.

I’m guessing Canada’s national networks called the bluffs of Stephen Harper and Jack Layton… forcing both men to change their tune.

I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing how May handles herself against Harper, Layton, Stephane Dion and Gilles Duceppe.

From what I’ve seen so far… she’ll have no problem getting in a few jabs.

Here’s to seeing some good political fireworks.

The good news is… if the debate is boring… I can flip the channel to Sarah Palin battling Joe Biden in the U.S. Vice-Presidential debate scheduled for the exact same night.

TV Networks Should Let Her Play

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Remember the baseball movie The Bad News Bears?

Specifically, the scene when tens of thousands of fans in the Houston Astrodome are chanting “Let them play! Let them play!”?

In the movie, Major League Baseball officials relent and let the misfit Bears finish their miracle comeback to win the little-league championship.

I think Canada’s television networks should follow suit.

Elizabeth May, the leader of the Green Party, should be allowed to take part in the national leaders debate October 2nd.

The networks are saying “no” because other political leaders are threatening to not take part if May is allowed too.

I say call their bluff.

No politician will ever turn down a national television audience.

And no party leader would ever run the risk of a competitor getting his or her airtime.

I predict cooler heads will prevail and Elizabeth May will be allowed to debate.

It’s just too bad most people will be watching Sarah Palin battle Joe Biden during the U.S. Vice-Presidential debate scheduled for the exact same night.
