Lake Chapparal has an Underwater Park

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I am officially a PADI certified Open Water Diver.

Very cool… because it means I can scuba dive (with a buddy) anywhere in the world.

In finishing my course I discovered one of Calgary’s hidden surprises: an underwater park in Lake Chapparal.

The park is down about 23-feet and is full of concrete culverts instead of swings and slides.

The culverts are large, long, round tubes placed in formations on the bottom of the man-made lake.

You can swim right through them… and if you follow a course you get a pretty good tour of the lake.

Lake Chapparal hosts a triathalon this weekend.

So, if you swim through bubbles on the surface… know it’s me waving as you go by.

St. John’s knows how to do it right

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

There is nothing like a floating stat holiday.

People in St. John’s, Newfoundland waking up this morning… turning on their radios… and listening to find out IF the get today off work.

Why?

It’s Regatta Day… the first Wednesday in August… the day of the oldest continuous sporting event in North America.

The Royal St. John’s Regatta is held on Quidi Vidi Lake (said: Kid-dee Vid-dee)… and weather can impact the safety and times of rowing crews.

So… it’s off to work today… because showers are postponing the event by 24-hours.

That means tomorrow is party-day in St. John’s.

Fingers crossed the weather co-operates.

I have been to the Regatta half-a-dozen times… and it is a BLAST!
