Inglewood: Calgary’s Oldest Community

Monday, July 28th, 2008

How would our city look if the Calgary Tower was built where the Elbow River meets the Bow River?

It might have happened if Inglewood was the centre of Calgary’s downtown.

Inglewood is Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood… and if Canadian Pacific Railway had decided to put our city’s first train station EAST of the Elbow… City Hall might have been located where Spolumbo’s is!

Inglewood is the focus of Your History… the latest segment of my feature series on Citytv.

The report looks at the people and stories behind Calgary’s oldest niehgbourhood.

Check it out tonight at 6:00 PM… on Your City… on Citytv.

Blankets… Beer… and Blue Rodeo

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I can’t wait for this weekend.

The weather will be nice.

I’m getting my blog finished early.

And I will spend all day Saturday listening to great music.

The Calgary Folk Music Festival is here again.

It runs Thursday through Sunday… and each day offers something different.

Saturday is when I’ll be wandering around Prince’s Island.

That’s when Blue Rodeo is headlining.

Come by and say hello… and try not to laugh when I sing out of key.

Your History - 660News teams up with Citytv

What do Calgary’s first shopping area… the city’s oldest bar… and the Calgary Flames have in common?

The answer: Stephen Avenue.

Our outdoor pedestrian mall is the first shopping district established in Calgary… and the first subject of a brand new television series on Citytv.

The features are called Your History.

The stories will air every Monday at 6:00PM on Your City.

I have the pleasure of being the producer and reporter who’s taking a look at the heart of Calgary through a time machine.

Tonight’s segment focuses on Stephen Avenue and Old CityHall.

Bravest People on the Planet

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

The line-ups were long, the kids were tired, and the coffee was no where near strong enough BUT that didn’t stop thousands of brave parents and grand-parents.

The free breakfast for BMO Kid’s Day at the Calgary Stampede was a huge success this year… mostly because moms and dads had a great attitude.

About 30,000+ people waited for pancakes, sausage and juice.

Imagine the possible chaos that could have ensued with some people lining-up for more than an hour and a half.

Hundreds of families eventually made their way past me (because I was handing out the orange juice) and no one was complaining.

Thanks to the volunteers… Stampede staff… and all of the families who came out.

660News was proud to be part of making Kid’s Day one heck of a good time.

Elephants, Tigers and Runners… Oh My!

Monday, July 7th, 2008

I had the best weekend ever… wearing running shoes.

Sunday morning. 7:00 AM sharp. I ran in the Calgary Marathon.

What’s fun about pounding pavement, sweating profusely, and having stiff and sore muscles for days?

The course you get to run.

The Calgary marathon (see map here) starts at the Mewata Armoury… runs through downtown… cuts across the Stampede Grounds… and eventually makes it way through Ramsay and Inglewood and into the Calgary Zoo!

You actually run past elephants, tigers, and even flamingos!

Nothing takes you mind off your heavy breathing like pink birds.

The organizers of the Calgary Marathon are changing the course for next year.

Here’s hoping they keep the Zoo as part of the route.

Getting Married in Zero Gravity

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Why not!

That’s what I say about tieing the knot in the cosmos.

Rocket Plane Kistler Japan has started taking reservations for couples (and three friends) to fly high enough above Earth’s surface to float in zero gravity while they exchange vows.

Nothing says LOVE like a gravity-free first kiss.

It had better be a solid space-smooch because the trip costs $2.3 million.

If you think about it… you and your friends can split the cost 5-ways… so that means the real price is only $460,000 each.

Talk about going head over heels… literally!

Bon Voyage and congratulations!
