Calgary should follow the lead of Okotoks

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Kudos to the Town Council in Okotoks.

They’re moving toward banning smoking in vehicles while kids are along for the ride.

Calgary should do the same… immediately.

No child should be forced to inhale their mother’s or father’s second-hand smoke.

Anyone who opens a window thinking it flushes the cancer-causing cloud away is fooling themselves.

And anyone who thinks there’s nothing wrong with exposing their children to cigarette smoke should smarten up.

Here’s a link to check out: Okotoks By-Law

Contact your Alderman and the Mayor to let them know that Calgary should follow the lead of Okotoks.

The First Jig is on Me

Monday, June 16th, 2008

If you’re looking for some east coast charm in Calgary come out this Wednesday night.

Even if you just want to heckle me as I emcee… come on down.

The Calgary Affinity Newfoundland and Labrabor Dinner is happening on June 18th.

It’s at the Calgary Petroleum Club.

The cost is only $150.

Damhnait Doyle and Kim Stockwood will be playing.

And the money goes to support scholarships and bursaries.

Food… fun… and bunch of Newfoundlanders… what more do you need!

A BIG mistake on the West LRT by City Council

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

The route for the West LRT is set in stone… and it’s not as good as it could be.

City Council should have spent the extra $90 million (approximately) to bury the C-Train tracks below 17th Avenue SW all the way to the 45th Street Station (see this link)… possibly even further along to 47th Street SW.

Why?

Short-term financial pain for long-term traffic gain.

Under the final design plan 17th Avenue will turn into another 36th Street NE. And most drivers know that 36th Street NE is where left-hand turns go to die.

Here’s an abbreviated version of what City Council chose as the route:

The West LRT will rise as it comes out of downtown. It’ll stay elevated as it runs west along 10th Avenue SW. The tracks will run up the middle of Bow Trail. Then under Westbrook Mall. Then rise back to street level at 41st Street SW running down the MIDDLE of 17th Avenue SW. BIG MISTAKE. The C-Train shouldn’t have come back to ground level until atleast the LRT station at 45th Street SW. The line then continues on ending at 69th Street SW by the Westside Rec Centre. (all West LRT maps)

Anyone who has grit their teeth in frustration knows how big of a pain turning left on 36th Street NE can be… and that is what’s going to happen along 17th Ave.

I’d hate to be the Ward 6 Alderman in 2015.

I must be doing something right

I am having such a lucky streak I plan on leaving the office today and buying a lottery ticket.

My last two blogs are about how much I enjoy space exploration… and today I read this headline: National Astronaut Recruitment Campaign

What are the chances!

The Canadian Space Agency is looking for people to train as the next astronauts representing our country.

No experience necessary.

They will teach you how to live in zero gravity.

They will teach you how to work Canada’s robotic arm.

They will teach you how to go to the bathroom on the International Space Station.

Cool!

One catch: journalists need not apply.

Drat…

Apparently you have to have a background in engineering, science, or medicine.

I’m out… but if YOU are interested check out the link below and good luck!
