Recycling in Calgary is Laughable

The City of Calgary might delay curbside recycling… AGAIN.

That is ridiculous… irresponsible… and downright archaic.

The problem is Alderman can’t agree. If the final details about the program can’t be hammered out, it might not be up and running until 2011!!

Edmonton has had curbside recycling for 20-years… since 1988 (yes… the year of the Winter Olympics in Calgary).

Mississauga has had curbside pick-ups since 1986.

Ottawa has had blue box recycling since the late 1980s.

It’s time to tell your Alderman to stop talking… and to get curbside recycling in place.

Why is the City trying to resurrect the dead? Surely these people are old enough to remember “we’ve been there, done that”. Some of us still have that expensive “Blue Box” to prove it. Besides destroying the livelihood of many in small businesses, they plan to tax responsible homeowners that already recycle. They could hire a lot of people to clean up around the recycle bins for a lot of years for the cost of running the curbside program. Part of the problem at the bins is the wind which will also blow the stuff throughout every neighborhood. Why does Cochrane have a Green Bin for plastic like Yogurt containers etc. and we don’t?
    Thank you.

Why does Cochrane have a Green Bin for plastic like Yogurt containers, etc. and we don’t? Good question. I used to take all my recycling to a business called A & P, but can’t now, because from what I hear, the City of Calgary wouldn’t extend their business licence and wants to get into the collection business themselves, and charge me through my taxes for what I used to do for free. I drove my recyling to a private company, and now the City of Calgary wants to get into the recyle business and charge me for what I used to do myself for no cost. Recycling should be done by private businesses and not by government
