Overheard in the grocery store line-up.
I was in Safeway yesterday, picking up some frozen pizzas for the game. The cashier was chatting with another employee about how they lose about 20 grocery carts a day. So, I was thinking, wow, that’s a lot of people cruising around back alleys looking for cans and clothing. But no, apparently they sell them for the scrap metal!
Can you believe it? People will steal anything! And at about $400 per cart, that’s a huge loss for grocery stores. Now I kind of understand why Safeway charges us $4.99/lb for red peppers!
*just an fyi - this guy isn’t stealing these carts for scrap metal, he’s building a grocery cart tree

I used to work at Safeway when I was in high school. I made $10/hour back then, and I think they pay the kids about the same amount now. So, why don’t they hire a couple of kids to guard the parking lot to make sure nobody leaves with the carts and pay them $10/hr-for a 10 hour shift that’s $200 total to save $8,000/day. And for my ingenious suggestion I just want $1,000/day and Safeway will still save more than $6,000/day at each store. If there are 100 Safeway stores in the lower mainland, then Safeway can send me $100,000/day, thanks, I can use the money, dz
