Snow Day…..

I think we as adults, should take snow days like we did when we were kids….the stipulation being, you have to spend the day as you did when you were a kid…..skating or on a sled, maybe making $ shovelling driveways….however you spent your day….do you recall your fave tobogganing hill?  Every neighbourhood had one…..even if you lived in Winnipeg:)  Ours was ‘Gordon’s Hill’.  It was on the farm property belonging to Mr. Gordon….it looked so big and ominous as kids, such a far climb back up after a crazy ride down the hill.  The only obstacles were the fence at the bottom of the hill.  If you hit the fence you were AWESOME!!  The other obstacle, the frozen cow crap.  Big, frozen, ass-bumping obstacles.  On a crazy carpet, you knew when you found one…..I miss snow days…..

Good luck with the Princess Margaret Cash and Cars Lottery Ticket Blowout. Hi Samantha!

First of all, thanks so much for posting the codes for the Princess Margaret Lottery. I ended up missing some of them because of my Fiancé. He was up until 6 in the morning because of pain from an injury, and so he was understandably a little grumpy when the alarm went off at 9am this morning. I figured the best thing to do was let him sleep, so I missed the codes from 10 - 1. I was just praying that you would post them on your blog. I really appreciate that you help us loyal listeners out that way. I check your blog every day by the way.

I totally agree with you about snow days. I grew up in New York City, so we didn’t get too many really good snow days when I was growing up. In fact, I experienced the first school closure in 18 years when I was in Highschool. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. When we did have some snow, we did go to this crazy hill in Central Park. One year the whole thing froze over into solid ice. I think that’s the craziest sledding experience I ever had. I was on one of those “Flying Saucers” and boy did I fly. I ended up turning around some how and going down the hill backwards. It was all fun and games until I crashed back first into a very solid tree. Ouch.

Now, as to your “deal”… I would love to give you a ride in my hot car if I win one, but believe it or not, I don’t have a driver’s licence. I don’t even know how to drive. That’s one of the downsides to growning up in NYC. No one actually drives down there. It’s way too expensive to own a car, and parking is impossible. I guess now that I’m here in Toronto, it’s time to learn how. Winning a car would be the perfect excuse to learn. Anyway thanks again. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Keep on rocking!

    All the best,
    Serena

Our first hill was at the grade school…what a great hill. All of us went down on pieces of cardboard or the well-worn seat of our pants (don’t tell my Mom).

Our second hill was called Canadian Tire Hill. You had to avoid a steel post (what were we thinking!!) We always tried to get 8 people on a 7 seat toboggan (one extra on the front). Our own house property was so big, we watered and iced a skating rink that the neighbourhood kids came to.

Do you remember the place where all the high school kids congregated in their cars, in all seasons…ours was called “Cummer Hill” at the end of ‘Cummer’ (would you believe) Avenue in North York (Willowdale at the time).

When we hit college age or were working (moi) we all congregated at the Harvey’s at Jane and Wilson, the first one. I remember the small parking lot with too many parked cars, even in winter; and trying to fit in as they drove their way around the building.

Next stop was the drive-in. Ahh those heaters really worked on winter nights, so cozy…and you even turned the car on intermittently for extra warmth. You parked your car on a slight hill…even more slippery and trickier in the winter. Sometimes the windshield screen would fill with snow or rain. sigh. Guess Drive-in’s don’t do that anymore.

My favorite hill when I was a kid was in southwest Calgary called Motorcycle Hill near Sandy Beach not far from the bottom of the Glenmore Dam. In the summers the hill riders would try to get to the top and in the winter the kids would damn near kill themselves going down. It was a blast!

    Hey Samantha:

I like your idea… and willing to join with anyone else who wants to go tobogganing too… providing they have a toboggan to lend me… don’t know where I left mine.

    Keep up the great work..

Cheers to the Queen of the airways..

    Vinnie
