It seems apparent to those who have paid attention over the years, that the illegal immigrants (latinos and hispanics) in the United States don't have a chance when Americans are still persecuting the African-Americans just because of skin color. It is controversial because it makes us face the reality that there are still incidents like this anywhere in this world in this century. Mellencamp is repeating a fact, there are still people out there who do not feel that anyone that is not white has a place on this earth. It is a fact that there is intolerance for many things in this world. As a person in the military, i have seen my fair share of what people do to each other. This is how civil wars start.
