Total Solar Eclipse

Aug1, 6:30am EDT - Live program; 6am EDT - Telescope only feed

The total blotting out of the sun occurs as the new moon moves directly between the sun and the earth. The moon’s dark inner shadow then falls on parts of the world - this time, for Canada, Greenland, Russia, Mongolia and China. For best viewing, watch the live webcast from the remote Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwestern China near the Mongolian border. The next one won’t happen for our continent til 2017; 2026 for Europe; 2030 for Russia.

Stand Up To Cancer, Sep5th

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Caught this on The View this morning with special guest Katie Couric… a special day dedicated to those fighting cancer, and those that have lost loved ones to the dreaded disease. One in two men in the US will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. One in three women…

US citizens are tired of waiting for the government to grant more money to fund research for a cure, so they’ve taken matters into their own hands, starting with this most admirable movement.

We need to do something similar in Canada, where we have a number of exceptional doctors, right here in our own city, on the verge of a cancer-busting breakthrough.

This is where the end of cancer begins.

Pity the fool that pulled this commercial!

But it caused a stink for the Mars candy company over in the UK…

The Human Rights Campaign said the spot “conjured up stereotypes of gay men,” as the man speed-walking walks in (what the HRC calls) “an exaggerated manner.”

C’mon… seriously… that’s what speed-walkers walk like!!!

Ottawa police are looking for the owner of this metre-long iguana caught south of the Central Experimental Farm early Friday.

A complaint came in about the green, yellow and brown reptile around 4:15 a.m. on a road near Fisher Avenue and Malibu Terrace, two blocks south of Baseline Road.

It took four officers to corral the animal and capture it with a makeshift lasso.

If the li’l green guy belongs to you, contact the police to claim him, or Dino Reptiles in Manotick, where the lizard is boarding.

Words to live by… from the late Randy Pausch

Friday, July 25th, 2008

The sad yet inevitable has happened. Randy Pausch has passed away. The former professor at Carnegie Mellon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and became an Internet sensation after his inspirational Last Lecture (above) became viral on YouTube. Pausch subsequently appeared on Oprah and his Last Lecture was recently turned into a book. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and children, whom he dedicated his moving speech to. Words to live by…

Randy was invited back to Carnegie Mellon this past May to give the charge to the graduates. They students gave him a charge instead. Please listen to what may be the last speech of this great man's life...

It’s a koala, not a bear!

CANBERRA (Reuters) - A koala that cheated death after being hit by a car at 100 kmh (about 60 mph) and dragged with his head jammed through the vehicle grill for 12 kms (about 7 miles) is being dubbed Australia’s luckiest marsupial.

The eight-year-old male koala, named “Ely ‘Lucky’ Grills” by rescuers, was struck by an unwitting motorist north of Brisbane and found only when the car stopped after being flagged down by another vehicle.

“To have him survive and virtually unscathed is quite miraculous,” Australian Wildlife Hospital spokewoman Carolyn Beaton told Reuters Tuesday.

“Lucky” hung on during his ordeal with one arm and his trapped head, and was freed with household scissors used like a fireman’s “jaws-of-life” to cut around the car’s mesh grill with the horrified owner’s permission, Beaton said.

“Whilst Lucky was in shock, he quickly recovered and was nearly better after a couple of hours rest and a feed,” she said.

Lucky will stay at the hospital, set up by the late television wildlife and crocodile crusader Steve Irwin, for 45 days to recover from his experience and receive treatment for a chlamydial infection.
