Madonna and Guy to end marriage after 7 tempestuous years

Madonna told Guy Ritchie she wants a divorce after the couple agreed they had fallen out of love. They admitted to each other that their 7-year marriage was doomed because they had simply drifted apart.

A friend said last night: “They were both very calm. Madonna told Guy: ‘I’m sorry, I want a divorce’. And he agreed. It was quite painless but very sad.”

Both parties have now talked to divorce lawyers to ensure that the break-up is orderly and as amicable as possible.

Without a pre-nuptial agreement, Guy could be looking at up to £50million of Madge’s £300million fortune.

Friends insist the movie director is unlikely to wage a court battle for more of the star’s millions. The couple have already made the welfare of their children - Lourdes, 11, Rocco, seven, and adopted David, two - their top priority.

One source said: “Guy is a decent bloke, full stop. It’s not his style to start profiteering from such sorry circumstances. He’s got too much respect for his wife and children.”

Guy has taken informal legal advice from Forsters, a top London firm specialising in divorce and family matters. The person tipped to represent him is Ann Northover, who heads the company’s family division. She said: “I can only say that I have no involvement at the moment.”

Madonna has hired Fiona “Steel Magnolia” Shackleton who handled Paul McCartney’s split from Heather Mills.

The couple, who have had problems for a year, have been leading increasingly separate lives. They were even living in separate parts of their London pad.

Friends admitted the fiery relationship had become too difficult for both.

One said: “They both got tired of the fighting. It’s like two prize-fighters slugging it out. Finally, they became exhausted.”

This is a bad omen…

The restaurant where Tom Cruise crooned to Kelly McGillis in the movie “Top Gun” has been gutted by a fire in San Diego.

A cook at Kansas City Barbecue says the blaze started Thursday in an open cooking pit and spread quickly to the rest of the restaurant’s interior.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman says the landmark restaurant is `destroyed.’

But no one was hurt and the fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes.

A sign in the restaurant notes that the 1986 movie’s `sleazy bar scene’ was filmed there.

Damage is estimated at $400,000, not including the cost of photographs and props from the film.

cf-18.jpg

A versatile, world-class fighter aircraft, the supersonic CF-18 Hornet can engage both ground and aerial targets. Its twin engines generate enough thrust to lift 24 full-size pick-up trucks off the ground.

As the Canadian Air Force’s frontline multi-role fighter, the CF-18 is used for air defence, air superiority, tactical support, training, aerobatic demonstration, and aerospace testing and evaluation.

The aircraft is equipped with a sophisticated radar system that can track targets in all weather and from great distances. An optional Nitehawk pod, which contains an infra-red (heat-sensitive) camera, allows pilots to see targets at night and in low visibility conditions. The pod also has a laser designator to guide precision bombing.

Because of its superior power and speed, and its exceptional tracking capabilities, the CF-18 has had great success in hundreds of military operations in Canada and around the world.

Yabba Dabba Prank

Gotta LOVE a good prank… posted in today’s Ottawa Citizen:

Someone apparently decided the Museum of Nature’s wooly mammoths needed a little accessorizing, and Fred Flintstone was just the thing.

A museum spokesman said the Flintstone figure appears to be one of the hundreds created to promote a multi-vitamin produced by pharmaceutical giant Bayer Inc.

The cutout was removed after passersby told museum staff.

UFOs or plain ol’ partygoers?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

A spate of UFO sightings in the skies above Britain have been blamed on newlyweds launching dozens of blazing Chinese lanterns into the night air at their reception parties.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence received dozens of reports of groups of rotating, cube-shaped UFOs in the evening sky in past weeks, and the mystery craft were even captured on mobile phone cameras.

A police helicopter crew was among those to spot the suspicious ‘flying saucers’, prompting the Sun tabloid to announce that an ‘Alien Army’ was gathering above the seemingly tranquil British countryside.

But there may be a more mundane and logical explanation: the recent trend for releasing lit Chinese lanterns into the sky to celebrate weddings and other big events.

One newly-married couple released 100 lanterns into the sky shortly before the purported UFO sighting nearby.

What do YOU think?

Mysterious lights in the sky? Some British soldiers thought they might be unidentified flying objects. Then again, they might be those blazing Chinese lanterns released by the partygoers down the road — a new craze in England. Once they are lit, the small lanterns rise into the sky, much like hot air balloons.

AUCTION FOR MAN’S LIFE UNDERWAY

Back in March, Ian Usher, a British man living in Australia, had plans to auction everything he owned on eBay. Well, his auction went live on eBay Sunday, and bidding has been going well.

Usher says he wants a fresh start after realizing that most things in his current life remind him of the relationship he had with the wife of five years whom he broke up with more than a year ago.

Usher’s hoping to get around $475,000 for all of his possessions — minus his passport, wallet, and the clothes on his back. The winning bidder get his house, car, motorcycle, job — everything.

Today is the Happiest Day of the Year

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Scientists at Cardiff University in England have factored outdoor activity, nature, social interaction, positive memories of childhood, temperature, and anticipated time off and figure their formula points to today being the happiest.

The scientists say we got a healthy dose of social interaction on Father’s Day, last Sunday.

Next week, most Canadians will anticipate a four-day weekend as July 1st falls on a Tuesday.

And, incredibly popular soccer competitions are boosting spirits in Europe with the Euro Cup running from June 7 to June 27.

Plus today is Friday and the start of the summer weekend.
