We’re All A Bunch Hotel Room Thieves

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

This morning we were talking about people that stay in a hotel room and leave with more than they came with.

According to TripAdvisor, 22% of people ADMIT to stealing. How many don’t admit? It’s also estimated that hotel room theft costs the North American hotel industry over 100 million dollars annually.

Now to be fair, I’ve been guilty of snatching up the soap after I’ve used it. But that’s used soap, the hotel would have just thrown it out anyway right? I’m saving the environment!

But some people go much further as Carmen from the Days Inn Timmins told us this morning. She says that guests taking towels and even batteries from the remote and smoke alarm are a regular occurrence! I can’t believe someone would ever take the battery out of a smoke alarm. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Are you really that hard up for a 9V? I mean honestly, what do you own that even takes a 9V? Besides your own smoke alarm…

Check out these rockin’ seniors….I think someone spiked their tea.

This Force is No Farse

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

When asked about their religious beliefs, some Canadians penciled in Jediism in the latest Canadian Census.

It’s no joke.

Star Wars fans are joining together - light sabres and all - to share in the values expressed in the George Lucas films.

We talked to John the Jedi from Texas this morning - he’s a believer in The Force. I didn’t know what to expect when we called him up. And you know what…I was pretty impressed. John was a really sweet guy, not an odd bird at all.

…And just for fun…have you seen this one? The poor kid in this video has been teased online quite a bit. Maybe more than ‘a bit’…it’s been viewed more than 4 million times!

Party Pooper

Friday, January 18th, 2008

A 16 year old guy from Australia threw a party while his parents were away on vacation. Nothing strange about that, right?

…Until things got out of hand…dun dun dunnnnnnnn….

Here’s the whole hilarious story.

Best Wings In Timmins (and surrounding area)

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

It’s kind of like the People’s Choice Awards of Wings, but without celebrities and acceptance speeches. Actually, it’s just like THIS YEAR’S People’s Choice Awards. I’m sure Queen Latifah enjoys a wing or two every now and then. Thanks to our Club Q Rockstar’s votes, here are the 9 best places to order a pound of wings in the north according to you. Just in time for the weekend. Mmm…

Top 9 Wings In Timmins (and area):

  1. Casey’s Bar and Grill
  2. Mickey J’s Big House
  3. Nikki’s Sports Gallery
  4. East Side Mario’s
  5. Jake’s Bar and Grill (South Porcupine)
  6. Moneta Hotel
  7. Stop 610 (Connaught)
  8. Olindo’s Pizza (Iroquois Falls)
  9. Montana’s

And how do you like ‘em?

  • 27% of Rock Stars said “With A Beer”. We think that goes without saying.
  • 2nd place was a tie for “Medium” and “Hot” with an honourable mention going to “Honey Garlic”.

Have you seen her new show on CBC? Wednesday nights at 8:30.

In the National Post, Timmins’ own Natalie Brown writes about her transition from the North to stardom. See? Shania Twain isn’t the only celebrity to come from this city.

Mark, a New York City comedian, needed a place to stay while his apartment was being fumigated for cockroaches.

He considered crashing at a friend’s or staying in a hotel…but in the end, Mark made IKEA his home away from home.

What store would you pick to live in for a week? Shawn’s pick is Walmart because it has pretty much anything you’d need on it’s shelves. Now that our local Walmart is open 24hours a day, Shawn, you can make that dream a reality!

As for me, if the store has a hot tub, I’m there!

Timmins on TV!

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

While American shows are in reruns because of the ongoing writer’s strike, CBC is offering up a bunch of new programming to watch.

One of the shows premiering this week is Sophie.

And the best part? The lead character, Sophie, is played by Timmins’ own, Natalie Brown!

Check out Natalie on CBC tonight at 8:30!

 Here’s a sneak-peak!

Sick of being sick?

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Cold and flu season is here in the north in a big way. It seems like we’ve been short staffed for a month with people here at the radio station taking sick days left, right and centre. Of course, the World Juniors were on, so that might have something to do with it.

In any case, Mel has been fighting a cold since the beginning of the new year. I’ve managed to stay healthy so far, but I’m not so naive to think I’m immune just yet. For now, Mel and I have avoided sharing a microphone…which is really easy since we each have our own mic and always have.

Anyway, Tuesday morning we’ll be talking about the common cold. The one that Mel has. The one that has no cure but to just wait it out. However, there are some things that you can do to avoid getting sick and speed up your recovery - we’ll tell you what. Also, we’ll answer the big question: Can you make out with someone who’s got the cold without catching it yourself? Umm…we’re not testing any theories though…sorry Mel.

Cough.

Illegal Car Idling

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

The City of Ottawa has kicked off the new year with a new law. There is now a fine of up to $100 for drivers caught running the engine of their car while stopped at the curb for more than three minutes.

This means that if your car is unoccupied and left running in any temperature, you could be charged. Now let me tell you, as someone that once lived in Ottawa, while it’s not northern Ontario, the nation’s capital can be a cold city in the winter.

Imagine that law here in Timmins! This morning it was -30, or 38 below with the wind chill. No more warming your car up in the morning before work on a minus 38 day. Kind of makes that new car starter you just had installed useless doesn’t it?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll all for saving the environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But, aren’t there better ways to do just that? Especially in a cold place like here where getting our tongue stuck to the steering wheel could be a real reason to stay home from work? Okay, maybe I’m being a bit ridiculous. What do you think?
