Senator Larry Campbell, a former left-leaning mayor of Vancouver, says he’s not endorsing anyone for the city’s top job during the next civic election in the fall.  He is, however, disappointed a potential right-of-centre candidate has already bowed out of the race.

The senator admits he wanted BC Finance minister Carole Taylor to run and he talked to her about it.  “The reason I asked Carole Taylor is because I thought she’d make a great mayor.  Other people approached her about it too.”

Last election, Campbell endorsed the left-leaning Jim Green, who lost to Sam Sullivan.

Taylor bowed out of the upcoming race on Monday, following weeks of speculation.  She says she is not comfortable forcing her Vancouver-Langara constituents to hold a by-election so close to the next provincial vote next year.

Taylor has already announced she will not seek re-election in 2009.
