Don Henley

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Don Henley was born July 22nd, 1947 in Gilmer, Texas.  Out of all of the Eagles, Don Henley had the most successful solo career. After the group broke up, Henley released his first solo album, I Can’t Stand Still. Although it wasn’t as successful as an Eagles record, the album performed respectably, launching the number three single “Dirty Laundry” and going gold. Building The Perfect Beast followed two years later and established Henley as a solo star in his own right. Featuring the Top Ten hits “Boys of Summer” and “All She Wants to Do Is Dance,” as well as the Top 40 singles “Not Enough Love in the World” and “Sunset Grill,” the album sold over two million copies and stayed on the charts for over a year. Henley’s third album, 1989’s The End of The Innocence, was his most ambitious record yet, as well as his most commercially successful.  What year did the Eagles break up?

A)  1980

B)  1981

C) 1982

Matthew Good

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

When Matthew Good first formed the Matthew Good Band it was kind of by accident. He was recording a few songs he had written and called some musician friends together to help out. The name Matthew Good Band was just something he came up with, something he meant to use for a while until he could think up a better name. Fate happened to step in and take over. That first album, Last of The Ghetto Astronauts, an independent release, did better than he ever dreamed.  By 2000, they were further set to do a little stirring in the United States. The band walked away with a number of awards and nominations over the years, such as Best Male Vocalist, Best Live Performance, Artists of the Year, Best Group, Best Album, Best Video, Best Single, and more.  What was the first single released in America?

A)  Let’s Get It On

B)  Strange Days

C)  Hello Time Bomb

Matchbox Twenty

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Matchbox Twenty formed in Orlando, Florida in 1996.  The band’s debut album “Yourself Or Someone Like You” was released in October 1996 to little attention, but Matchbox Twenty continued to tour America, cultivating a fan base.  During fall 1997, the record picked up momentum, as “3am” became a bigger hit than “Push,” propelling their debut record to multi-platinum status. Early in 1998, the group was named Best New Band by Rolling Stone’s annual reader’s poll — proof that, even if Matchbox Twenty wasn’t winning critics, they were winning over a wide, mainstream audience.  Their success brought more attention to Matchbox Twenty, and the album rocketed to over ten million copies sold — which now qualified it for the RIAA’s Diamond Award, which is only granted to records that have moved over ten million units.  Band leader and singer Rob Thomas was an army brat born at a military base in what country?

A)  United States of America

B)  Britain

C)  Germany

Queens of The Stone Age

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Formed from the ashes of stoner rock icons Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age reunited the group’s singer/guitarist Josh Homme, drummer Alfredo Hernandez, and bassist Nick Oliveri along with new guitarist/keyboardist Dave Catching. The project’s origins date back to Homme, who in the wake of Kyuss’ 1995 demise relocated to Seattle to tour with the Screaming Trees; he soon began working with a revolving lineup of musicians including the Trees’ Van Conner, Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron, and Dinosaur Jr.’s Mike Johnson, recording a series of 7″s originally issued under the name Gamma Ray. After rechristening the group Queens of the Stone Age, Homme recruited Hernandez to begin work on their self-titled debut LP, issued in late 1998 on Loosegroove; after the album was completed, Oliveri left the Dwarves to rejoin his former bandmates, with the subsequent addition of Catching rounding out the roster.  Who played drums on Queens Of The Stone Age’s third album?

A) Alfredo Hernandez

B) Matt Cameron

C) Dave Grohl

Joe Walsh

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Joe Walsh was born November 20th, 1947 in Witchita, Kansas.  Joe initially studied the oboe and clarinet before later playing bass in local bands the G-Clefs and the Nomads.  While he attended Kent State University, he finally picked up the guitar, fronting the collegiate combo The Measles from 1965 to 1969. He then joined the Cleveland-based hard rock trio the James Gang and appeared on their debut LP ”Yer Album”.   Eventually, Walsh joined the Eagles, making his debut on their best-selling Hotel California album.  In 1979, Walsh announced his campaign for President of the United States, promising “free gas for everyone” if he won (he didn’t.) Joe Walsh remains one of the most colorful characters in rock & roll, lending his distinctively reedy vocals, off-the-wall lyrics, and expansive guitar leads to a series of AOR staples including “Funk #49,” “Rocky Mountain Way,” and “Life’s Been Good.”  Who was the guitarist Joe replaced when he joined the Eagles?
