Genesis

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Genesis formed in Godalming, England in 1966.  And in 2007, Genesis just enjoyed one of the most successful reunion tours of the year.  Longevity is this group’s forte.  They’re one of the most successful rock acts of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.  Genesis enjoyed a longevity exceeded only by the likes of the Rolling Stones and the Kinks!

The group’s history goes back to thier time associated with the Garden Wall, a band founded by 15-year-olds Peter Gabriel, and Tony banks in 1965 at a “School” in Godalming.  Fellow students Michael Rutherford and Anthony Phillips were members of another group called “Anon”. The two groups initially merged out of necessity as the older members of each group graduated.

For 100 Jack Nation points, what is the full name (one word) of the school in Goldalming, England?

Counting Crows

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Counting Crows got together in August 1991 and they didn’t have to wait long to be successful.  In fact, you might say they became the “overnight” sensation of 1994.  Comparisons range from R.E. M. to The Band to Van Morrison. In early ‘93, Counting Crows recorded their debut album and it was released in the fall.  Producer T-Bone Burnett was behind the mixing board and the band delivered a dark and somber record, that was nonetheless,  full of real, raw emotion and tortured lyrics. The name of that album is “August and Everything After” and the single, ”Mr. Jones,” became their ticket to the big time.

For 100 free Jack Nation Points, which of the three ladies from the tv show “Friends” most recently dated Counting Crows’ singer, Adam Duritz in real life?

A) Jennifer Anniston

B) Courtney Cox

C) Lisa Kudrow

Leave your answer under “comments” and I’ll email you a bonus code if you’re correct.

Please feel free to leave me me any blog comments, band suggestions and questions under “comments” or I won’t get it.

Got an Opinion?  Should I change the blog so that you enter your answer in the bonus code section or should we leave it status quo?  Thoughts?

As always, thanks a lot for dropping by every day.  You’re comments, suggestions and your help getting more comments from other rock trivia buffs is much appreciated.

Talk to you on the radio at 6pm!

The Doors

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

The Doors formed in Los Angeles, California in the summer of 1965.  From the beginning, the band’s focus was on their charismatic, (if not problematic), singer Jim Morrison, who proved increasingly unstable over the band’s brief career. In 1969, Jim was arrested for indecent exposure during a concert in Miami, an incident that nearly derailed the band for good. Nevertheless, the Doors managed to turn out a bunch of successful albums and singles through 1971, when, upon the completion of L.A. Woman, Morrison moved to Paris. He died there, apparently of a drug overdose while in the bath tub. The three surviving Doors tried to carry on without him, but eventually broke up.

For 100 Free Jack Nation points, what was Jim Morrison studying at UCLA before joining The Doors?

A) Art

B) Journalism

C) Film

The Cars

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

The Cars formed in Boston in 1976 and after sending a demo tape of “Just What I Needed” to the influential Boston radio station WBCN,  it quickly became the station’s most-requested song. For the remainder of the year, the group played Boston clubs, and they signed with Elektra Records in 1977.  The group would go on to be the most successful American new wave band to emerge in the late ’70s. With their sleek, mechanical pop/rock, the band racked up a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles that made them one of the most popular American rock & roll bands of the late ’70s and early ’80s.

For 100 free Jack Nation points, which member of The Cars lost a battle with pancreatic cancer on October 3, 2000?

A) Benjamin Orr

B) Elliot Easton

C) Greg Hawkes

Stone Temple Pilots

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Stone Temple Pilots formed in California in 1992.  The band took a lot of heat in their early days from critics who called them nothing but rip off artists who stole from bands like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.  And while it’s fair to say those bands did have an influence on STP, Stone Temple Pilots still put their own definitive stamp on alternative rock before taking their music to the stadiums.  Slick production and catchy riffs helped the band sell over 3 million copies of their debut album while the follow-up “Purple” hit number one on the charts upon its release.  This band was huge in 1993 before singer Scott Weiland’s drug problems began to derail their success.

For 100 free Jack Nation Points, what was the name of Stone Temple Pilots debut album?

Leave your answer under “comments” and I’ll e-mail you a bonus code if you got the goods.

In the meantime, are you like me, waiting for the Leafs to implode any day now?

Talk about a “Wicked Garden”.

The Clash

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

The Clash formed in London, England in 1976 and over the course of three weekends, the group recorded their debut album.  The Clash performed its first concert in the summer of ‘76 opening up for The Sex Pistols and went on to support the Pistols on their notorious Anarchy Tour. Though only three concerts were performed on that tour, it increased the Clash’s profile and the group signed a record contract in February of 1977 with British CBS.  The Clash used classic outlaw imagery and positioned themselves as rebels with a cause. Singing about revolution and the working class, they were adventurous, passionate, fiery, political, righteous, and exceptionally talented.  For a time, they really did seem like “the only band that mattered”.

Throughout 1977, two members of The Clash were in and out of jail for several minor offences, ranging from vandalism to stealing a pillowcase!  For 100 free Jack Nation points, which two members are we talking about?

Leave your answer under “comments” and I’ll e-mail you a bountiful bonus code for your dining and dancing pleasure - if you’re right.

BTW, if you’re a big rock fan, you NEED to have The Clash’s “London Calling” album in your collection.

This is Radio Clash.

‘Til next time, have a good one mate.

Guns N Roses

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

Guns N Roses formed in 1985 and the band members were dark, sleazy, dirty, and honest — everything that good hard rock and heavy metal should be.  And their music was basic and gritty, with a solid hard, bluesy base. There hadn’t been a hard rock band this raw or talented in years, and they were given added weight by Axl Rose’s primal rage, the sound of confused, frustrated white trash vying for his piece of the pie.   At a time when dance music dominated the airwaves, these bad boys brought hard rock crashing back onto the charts in a big and loud way.

For 100 Jack Nation Points, what was the name of the record company that signed GNR to a record contract after the band released an EP in 1986?

Leave your answer under “comments” and I’ll e-mail you a bonus code if you know your stuff.

Have a great weekend and welcome to the jungle!

Smashing Pumpkins

Friday, January 11th, 2008

The Smashing Pumpkins formed in Chicago, Illonois in 1988.  Leader and lead singer Billy Corgan’s musical vision was lived out through a unique and sometimes dark mixture of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth rock and psychedelia, creating a layered, but powerful sound driven by distorted and swirling guitars. Add in that Billy was wise enough to exploit his angst-ridden lyrics, and unlike Nirvana (who were too destructive) and Pearl Jam (who didn’t like the spotlight), The Smashing Pumpkins by knowing how to play their cards right, eventually turned into the model of alternative rock success.  And they’re back in 2008 - are you a fan?

For 100 free Jack Nation Points, what kind of music did Billy Corgan’s father play on guitar?

Leave your answer under “comments” and I’ll e-mail you a smashing bonus code that’ll pad your account.

BTW, I love the Smashing Pumpkins “Siamese Dream” album!  Definitely one of my favourites.

U2

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

U2 formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976. The members, Bono (born Paul Hewson, May 10, 1960; vocals, guitar), the Edge (born David Evans, August 8, 1961; guitar, keyboards, vocals),  Larry Mullen, Jr. (born October 31, 1961; drums), Adam Clayton (born March 13, 1960; bass), and Dick Evans all responded to an ad posted by Larry in their high school, and the group formed as a Stones and Beatles cover band called the Feedback, which later changed to the Hype in 1977. Not long after, Dick Evans left the band to form the Virgin Prunes (great name huh). Following his departure, the group changed its name to U2.

I’m a big U2 fan, but even if you’re not, as a music fan, you can still appreciate that not too many bands have ever had either the enormous success, quantity of record sales or number one albums or number one singles or tons of awards or record breaking tours, etc. that U2 have.  The numbers say this is one juggernaut of a rock band, but the most impressive thing to me is, that a band that started in the mid seventies in Dublin with some high school buddies can still be so relevant thirty years later.  Few bands can make that claim.

I very much enjoyed a one week trip I took to Ireland with my brother before he got married a few years back. We definitely found lots of interesting places to check out and tons of fun places to just hang out.  The conclusion of the tour of the Guiness brewery was very cool. You end up in “Skybar”, with it’s panoramic glass view of downtown Dublin.  It doesn’t hurt either that you’re enjoying that view with a nice pint while relaxing in a leather recliner, with some good tunes and some good people.  Highly reccomend.

For 100 Free Jack Nation Points, what is the name of the Hotel that U2 owns in Dublin?

Leave your answer under “comments” and I’ll e-mail you a bonus code should you be correct.

Cheers,

Mike

PS - You gotta love the “craic”!

craic:  is “fun, enjoyment, abandonment, or lighthearted mischief; often in the context of drinking or music.”

Alice Cooper

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Vincent Damon Fernier was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 4th, 1948.  But you probably know him better as Alice Cooper, the king of shock rock and the pioneer of a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to disturb. Let’s just say Marilyn Manson ain’t got nothin’ on Alice Cooper.  Taking equally from horror movies, vaudeville, heavy metal, and garage rock, Alice Cooper created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood, and huge boa constrictors, all masterminded by the heavily made-up Furnier, who today is a scratch golfer, of all things.  While the visuals were extremely important to the group’s impact, the band’s music was very unique too.

For 100 free Jack Nation points, what was Vincent’s father’s occupation?

Leave your answer under “comments” and I’ll e-mail you a bonus code if you’re right.

Make sure you listen for the 9-2-5 $1000.00 Pay Song for a chance to win a grand, three times a day!
