Metallica formed in Los Angeles, California back in 1981 and the group went on to be one of the best and most influential heavy metal bands of the 80s.   No posers here, these guys were the real thing.  They looked like and talked like they were from the street. Metallica expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. Their album “Metallica”was released in 1991 brought the band to the mainstream resulting in a number one album that sold over seven million copies in the U.S. alone.

Before all that success though, in 1986, tragedy struck the band when their tour bus crashed killing original bassist Cliff Burton.  He was later replaced by Jason Newstead.
