David Bowie

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

He was born David Robert Jones on January 8th, 1947 in Brixton, England.  Bowie has been described as a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends.  Even when he was out of fashion in the ’80s and ’90s, it was clear that Bowie was one of the most influential musicians in rock, for better and for worse. Each one of his phases in the ’70s sparked a number of subgenres, including punk, new wave, goth rock, the new romantics, and electronica. Few rockers ever had such lasting impact.

Motley Crue

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Motley Crue formed in Los Angeles in 1981.  As one of the first and most influential hair metal bands of the ’80s, Mötley Crüe had a series of hit albums, the biggest and most noteworthy being 1989’s Dr. Feelgood.  The band went through several name changes before they were presented with the name Mottley Krue, derived from a time when one of the member’s previous bands were described as a “motley looking crew.” After agreeing on this name and altering the spelling somewhat, the newly formed group began to play at local clubs and soon became cult favorites, known for their unique stage theatrics and wild antics off the stage, including several run-ins with the law.

The Ramones

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

The Ramones formed in New York City in 1974.  The band’s first four albums set the blueprint for punk, especially American punk and hardcore, for the next two decades.  The group played their first concert on March 30, 1974, at New York’s Performance Studio.  By the end of the summer, the Ramones earned a residency at CBGB’s. For the next year, they played regularly at the nightclub, earning a dedicated cult following and inspiring several other artists to form bands with similar ideals.  By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials — four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics — and speeding up the tempo considerably, the Ramones created something that was rooted in early ’60s, pre-Beatles rock & roll and pop but sounded revolutionary.  The Ramones were the very first punk band.

For 100 Jack Nation Points, what New York City Borough are The Ramones from?

A)  Queens

B)  Brooklyn

C) The Bronx
