I’m singing the post-holiday email blues…

May 20th, 2008 by ldrew

There is nothing like clearing out  hundreds of emails upon return.
You take a few days off… and try (TRY!) to do what the experts say by not checking that work inbox while you’re off..and it’s always big deal when you come back in.

First the easy stuff: any email that starts with a reference to someone’s size, that gets deleted first.    Those babies still make it through the spamblocker!

The experts say..IF you have to check your emails while on the beach, do it once a day.. and do it first thing in the morning.
But bottom line… leave the blackberry at home.. even lock it up before you grab the suitcase.

Easier said than done.

I say go in an extra half-hour early… and keep hitting delete.

I promise.. I’m getting back to you today!

Love ya mom!

May 9th, 2008 by ldrew

Happy Mother’s Day to all this weekend.
We’re celebrating at the cottage with my mom and grandma.

The surveys show men will be the big spenders this weekend..with a trip to the spa rating high…along with gift certificates and books.
Consumers stateside are expected to spend a little less this year due to the economy - spending about $138.00 on average.
The National Retail Foundation says we’ll be cutting back on the larger items.. picking up smaller and more meaningful items.

My kids won’t say what’s up for me.. but the five-year-old says he’s been working hard on something at school.
He can never keep a secret!  I love it.

Have a great day Sunday!

I love you mom..thanks for always being there.

Hey Scuppie!

May 7th, 2008 by ldrew

The 80’s Yuppie is so….1980’s.

570’s Katie Simpson had this story in our 570 Morning News run  today: Meet the Scuppie.
(That would be the Socially Concious Upwardly-mobile person.)
A scuppie is a new breed of consumer, someone
who is financial comfortable.. and environmentally aware.
Sound familiar?

A scuppie is someone who will “go green” if given the choice.
They won’t ditch the SUV, but will choose organic foods and enviro- friendly cleaning products.
(I gotta say, some of those new “green” detergents do not get grass stains out of a five-year-old’s jeans.  I ‘ve returned to the powerful, death-defying, big jugged cleaning stuff popular even two years ago!)

Our family is trying to make better choices, whether it be food purchases, getting recycled paper for the computer..even searching out greener clothing.
I will miss the 80’s power suit complete with huge shoulder pads .
Those things are biodegradable….. right?

Edna Boil Returns

May 5th, 2008 by ldrew

Cast members of SCTV reunite tonight in T-O for a charity event.

Where would we be without Bob and Dog,  and Mel’s Rock Pile?
The Schmenge Brothers were so hot they even made an appearance at K-W Oktoberfest.

My favourite skit remains Tex and Edna Boil’s Organ Emporium.  Open 24 hours a day.
“Come on down..and get a fweee budgie!”
Confession time: I just spent the last 20 minutes on YouTube going over these clips again.

So witty.
Don’t forget this was the show that blew up Brooke Shields “real good” on the Farm Film Report!

John Candy.. we miss you.

Happy May Day.. grab the Lysol wipes.

May 1st, 2008 by ldrew

First there was the study that found women’s handbags (or in my case.. more like a suitcase!) carried a lot of germs.

And now this.
It’s just another reminder not to eat at the desk.
Turns out those office keyboards are dirtier than a toilet.
A British consumer group tested the desk equipment,
and found bugs that could cause food poisoning.
Some keyboards harboured five times more germs than one office toilet seat.
Experts say we should shake the dust and food crumbs
out of keyboards … and disinfect the keyboard with alcohol wipes.

It was just last year.. that University of Arizona researchers found the average office desktop harboured 400 times more bacteria than the average office toilet seat.

Yum.  Have the boss take you out for lunch.

Date Nights and Puppy Love

April 29th, 2008 by ldrew

After another crazy weekend of running around with the kids, we finally sat down Saturday night and rented Juno.
Loved it.  Fresh, sweet and funny,  I even shed some tears.  The humour and quirkiness were very much like that of Napolean Dynamite. It’s still one of my all-time faves.

Now we await the summer movie season, and the chance to really get a sitter and get out for a dinner and movie now that hockey season is behind us!
( No early Sunday morning practices for a few months anyway.. ahhhhh)

570’s showbiz editor Gloria Martin had a summer preview this morning on the 570 Morning News.
She says many flicks are really just T-V shows jumping to the big screen.
The Sex and The City gang hits theatres at the end of May..and there’s the updated Get Smart.
Remember those re-runs from the 70’s?

Also making “memory news” this week.. Donny and Marie will do Vegas later this year.
I know I’m getting older when:
A) I’m actually a little excited over this but don’t know why..
B) I remember watching the Donny and Marie Show back in the 70’s… ( Sonny and Cher also had a show the same time..)
C) I had to explain to our morning show producer Paul
the whole “I’m a little bit country..I’m a little bit rock ‘n roll” bit!

I  never had the purple socks but will cop to the plaid hems on my jeans..as a tribute to the Bay City Rollers.
I was VERY young.

A Match Made in Radio Heaven

April 22nd, 2008 by ldrew

What do you get when two radio producers get hitched?
A couple that is always on time.. and has everything planned to a “T” !

A big congratulations to Ryan and Jessie.
They were married over the weekend in Kitchener.
(Ryan produces the George and Tara show on our sister station CHYM FM, and Jessie is Jeff
Allan’s producer here on 570 News.)
You had to know that everything would go according to plan and on time!  It started with a sunny and warm day.
Jessie looked stunning.

And…when the invite says dinner at 6pm.. it goes right at 6pm with these two.
I just made it into my seat before the salad was served!
I should know better!

There is nothing like a great wedding to kick off the better weather season.  It was wonderful to meet both families, shed some tears during the speeches, and have a chance to kick back with the radio family as well.

I now have a serious crush on Jessie’s Grandpa from Wiarton.  ( Thanks for listening every morning!)

Ahhhhhhhhh……

April 15th, 2008 by ldrew

Signs that spring has truly arrived:

My grass has been raked… the possum has left its post under the deck.. and my daffodils are halfway there.

If that wasn’t enough of a sign..
The kids played outside for over two hours after school… and we made our first trip of the year to Dairy Queen.

It’s about time!

Congrats Andrew!

April 9th, 2008 by ldrew

We’re so proud.
Our former 570 Morning News reporter Andrew McLean made it official yesterday.  The award-winning reporter (and my former carpool buddy) officially got his badge yesterday at Regional Police Headquarters.
Check out the great pic in today’s Record on page B2.
I’ll being watching my speed on King by the 401 overpass!

Way to go Constable McLean!

Trading Spaces

April 4th, 2008 by ldrew

Bright and early this coming Monday morning
Glenn and I will be set up in a shiny new studio.
The 570 News gang will have a shorter walk down the hall.
Our new place is just doors down from the newsroom.

Why?  Our new radio sisters at 106.7..The KIX Chix will take over our old studio.
(Now I feel the need to clean up and vacuum for the new owners.  I promise we will leave the TV remote! )

How crazy have the last few weeks ( months for some..) been?  Our Managing Editor Paul McPhee has the desk closest to the construction zone.  His morning coffee
has been sprinkled with drywall dust.  We’ve all been a bit giddy from the paint fumes.
You might have seen our painters and drywall crew busy behind Glenn during his Rogers TV updates, even heard.. the drills and saws going.. during other reports.

It’s all done Monday.

And as our Head Engineer Mike likes to say..
“It should work!”
