Thanks for your input Dan. You do predict the gas prices correctly! We've noticed. :-) The question we all have is, WHEN will anything change? We feel helpless as consumers. I see another gas boycott email is going around and I predict it will be a big flop, just like the others, because we need gas! So we grimace and bear it. If there's something we could all do that would make a difference, we'd sure like to know. Thanks.

Hi Lisa,

I have a few comments about "gas pains a-plenty". Mike Eppel is right about China's importing of oil. I can add a few more...Iraq and Nigeria when do think things will settle done and peace with break out?

Dan is also, right that prices will go down, but not any time soon! Yes hedge fund mangers are going to put money where it is "hot", but there has been no real big sources of new oil finds in the middle east for over 20 years! Like fish in the ocean...there is a limit.

My advice is, to have some "gas (oil) in your RESPs". Remember when gas was 30 cents a liter or how about 70 cents? If you think we are going back in time, please let me know. I will buy some 8 cent stamps too!!

The real truth is oil has been dirt cheap for years like rice or wheat etc. Now these commodities are making up for "lost time" and fast.

regards,

Lisa - I have just a few comments about Mike's take.

1)GTA retailers are almost entirely controlled by the major refiners and therefore its a myth to suggest they can operate independently. That's why i pleaded for stronger competition law amendments in the ()'s to prevent the elimination of truly independent gas retailers. the proff is in the fact that when i predict the gas price for 680 every day, I'm bang on.
Retail margin is 5 cents per litre and thats the way it will stay.

2) The Energy Information Administration (EIA) has confirmed gasoline demand is slumping in the States and Mastercard says that consumption is down 6.8% from last year.

3) The China thing is nice but it obscures the issue Mike may not want to mention as "business" editor. Pure unadulterated speculation by the hedgefund managers looking to flee the greenback and equities/real estate options. Truth hurts, but no sensible or OBJECTIVE analyst (ie ones musing about future costs of gasoline/oil while selling its stocks) has any doubt about the disconnect between supply and demand and current values. There is going to be a serious correction downwards, and the only question is not if, but rather when. Im betting mid summer.

4) The Asian markets are not decoupled from the US. A recession there will hobble their growth. Already China has revised its growth from 11% to 7%. More importantly, the USA consumes 52% of all the world's transportation fuels. Thats the market that will determine the fate of speculators. As crude falls, refiner's margins willbe restored and supply will exeed demand. Its already happening.

Keep well. My RESP Bill is alive and kicking !

Hi. I have to agree with the article. I was riding my motorbike to work this morning (because apperantly i can barely afford gas in my car), and while I was riding by a gas station i noticed the price of gas. For a split second I thought that they put the zero in the wrong spot but then I realized that the zero was in the right spot ($120). Well!!!! The right sopt according to the oil companies. I can't believe how they are taking advantage of the Canadian public. It is interesting how the worm weather is here and the gas price jumps. Its called grrreeeedddd and not some stupid excuse they always give us. Most people barely make above the minimum wage and can barely afford to pay for food and shelter. With the price of gas going up all the time so does everything else. How much more can the government and the big corporations take from us. Well now I am waiting for them to ask for my first born (give them time, they will). I am sick of hearing some expert somewhere talking about how the driving habits of people haven't changed. The transportation system in Canada sucks. People have no choice but to drive to get to work and the oil and gas companies know this but it is another stupid excuse they use to make us feel like it is our fault. Shame on them and shame on our government for standing by and watching.
