Holden on for 40 years

It’s a rare feat to stay with the same company for 40 years anymore and even more so in an industry that relies on a combination of talent and weird working hours.

680’s Russ Holden has managed to weather all sorts of changes in the broadcasting industry and in the Rogers Radio family to mark 40 years on the air. He was congratulated and given gratitude by Ted Rogers himself and by our many colleagues. Everyone who works with Russ knows he’s an absolute treasure. He has a consistently great outlook and a warm and funny personality. We all love him!

Russ says he still gets a thrill out of climbing into Skymaster One to take to the air to report on traffic. And that, I think, is the key - after all of these years, Russ still really enjoys his work. He’s doing what he loves and it shows.

It’s not very often that a radio station can bring you someone with so much experience. That’s our Russ. Happy 40 years Russ and many more!

I agree with you - 40 years at one job is amazing these days. This is such a timely blog as today doesn’t Russ’s “partner in crime” celebrates his 34th year with the company. These two must have started when they were two!

We have watched Darryl and Russ flies the skies morning and afternoon day after day, for years, and given us the best traffic reports - any competition isn’t even close.

A few years back, I had the privilege of flying with Darryl, and he has an extraordinary talent to be able to juggle everything he does all at once and still report all the problems on the road.

This is such a timely blog - doesn’t Darryl Dahmer, celebrate his 34th year today with the company? We didn’t hear anything on the radio today referring to his anniversary, so it must be later in the week.

These two guys are the backbone of this radio station, especially the traffic division - no one has more expertise!

Hats off to Russ and Darryl for their long and successful careers with the best traffic reports anywhere!

I flew with Eddie Luther in the CFRB Bell G47. They were just putting the air conditioning units on the roof of the T.D. Centre. I became a pilot largely due to the experience.
I flew with Darryl ten to fifteen years ago. Just once. I too marvelled at Darryl’s ability to talk to so many controllers, his sense of humour, (the producer said “good radio” off air after a report), and Darryl’s ability to keep the ball in the centre as he made steep turns over the city.
Would love to take over someday if either one of you guys retire!
