Boyles’ Apartment Hunt

Boyle wants to move to an apartment somewhere downtown…

Where is the best area in Ottawa for a recently single (very heterosexual) mature male to hang his hat?

I think anywhere downtown would be fun to live, what I would like to know is where a single young at heart woman goes in Ottawa to meet a single mature man.

I’m scared for you Boyle, of all the proposals and suggestions that will come following this question.
Some may offer you a roomate through this. Watch out for the crazies. Good Luck!
Sorry, no other suggestion at this time.
    Cheers!

Hey Boyle I’ve been apartment searching myself for the last few months. I found a great place but am still apartment searching for family members now. One ad I keep coming across is a 1 Bdrm plus den apt. downtown at http://ottawa.en.craigslist.ca/apa/804240711.html It’s at 302 Strand, and the pictures look great. Very pricey for our taste but maybe you can afford it :)
If you hear of any other places downtown for a more affordable price let me know, my parents are also looking for a place downtown, it’s a difficult hunt, wish you all the success!

Well, I think around the Pretoria Bridge, although not exactly downtown, very trendy looking places - but there are new condos going up right downtown and perhaps he may be able to wait for the building to be erected…..of course, if he needs a place to hang is hat for a couple of weeks during the transition, I don’t have much space in my one bedroom but I have a queen sized bed that would enjoy his company!!! LOL.

he can live with me :)

    Hi Guys!
My husband Dean (you know him, he wore the dress to the Aerosmith concert for you!) is a paramedic in Ottawa. He says DO NOT find one on Bell street, Croydon Ave, Morrisett, Caldwell, or the four holes on Baseline and Meadowbrook Manor on Baseline. There are some other bad areas, but these rank right up there on the no-no list.

    Good luck!!
    Kelly

    Hello,

I think that the westboro area is a quiet place to live or the Tunney’s Pasture area.

    Good luck!

Britannia Beach area. Would you consider sharing a semi with a roommate? I may have something that may interest you.

All the best in your search.

Hi Boyle, I always found amazing apartments by walking in the areas I want to live, i.e.Sandy Hill (where the embassy- all of them are) - Charlotte, Friel, Stewart. They don’t usually advertise in the papers. Look at the old houses and see if there is an sign “apartment for rent”.

Another area is Bay street, Albert street around Bronson is also a great area - the building on the corner of Albert & Bronson is amazing and is “rent control”.

The Glebe is always nice. IF you are looking for something inexpensive, you might want to cross the bridge over to Hull. You can get a real nice 1 or 2 bedroom for about $500 a month.

    Hey Guys,

I have a friend of mine who actually rents out apartments for a lving among other things and he actually has an appartment for rent down town. This is what he wrote on his facebook message “Dave Has a 1300 sq ft 2 Br Apt for rent.. seconds from the Market, newly renovated, TOP FLOOR!!! VERY BITCHIN’ !! ” You can find him on facebook under Dave Demers or on his cell 613-797-9404 or at davedemers76@hotmail.com
Hope you like the place and the area, if not than good luck with your searc.

Westboro is a nice area! Some apartments for rent (2 bedrooms) on Byron Ave. near Woodroffe. Hope that helps.

There is a really nice apartment on Castle Hill Cres. I think it’s number 1000. I haven’t been inside, but it’s a quiet neighbourhood. I grew up nearby. It’s just off Maitland Ave.

If you’re looking for the downtown area, I suggest Lees Ave. They are mostly student residences, but 190 Lees is VERY nice (I live there, so I should know) and the two buildings across the street 169 and 171 are both fantastic.

There are some apartments on Alta Vista that are also nice, I’ve been inside them. I also recommend the apartments on Fisher Ave. The ones that are practically inside the Experimental Farm.

If you’re looking for condos, they’re building a bunch of new ones downtown (on Bank and Laurier, plus the two in the market), but also check out the ones near Blair. They’re on Bathgate near Montreal Rd. They’re super nice.

Best of luck finding a place to live. :)

I guess the question is whether you want to rent, or buy…and then whether you want to live close to your work, or do you like to commute….and then what the price range is. I know there is a condo apartment in the Manor Park area - which is about 10 minutes to downtown, and about 20 minutes to 105.3….

Hey Boyle…I used to live in Sandy Hill (Friel and Besserer, couple blocks from the Rideau centre). It was really nice. Never saw any riff raff there. Lots of students in the area though because of the University, so weekends can get a bit loud sometimes. I like the Byward Market too but it’s too expensive for me. Lot’s of action, lots of single people because of the bars and clubs, so it’s bound to be loud, but very nice apartments with high ceilings. And no matter where you end up, parking will be expensive.

I’ve lived in lots of downtown areas.
This property management company had lots of nice places all over the downtown
    http://www.fpm.on.ca/

Glebe. - Bus service was okay and lots of places to eat out and go for drinks and coffee.
Elgin Street - Lived closer to cartier. Plenty of pubs and coffee places but not else anymore.
If you take the bus best to walk up to the transit way since the elgin street busses all come at the exact same time.
Street parking is not easy to come by here if you try the park at night and leave during the day trick and avoid the
city parking fees. Recommend in this area an apartment with parking.

Market - By far my most FAVOURITE spot to live. Used to be able to come home and go grab food from the market/butcher etc
So many bars, restaurants and places to go out. All a 5 minute walk. Plenty of coffee places . My favourite being Planet Coffee
followed by Movenpic. Sorry if your a Tim Hortons Fan the line ups are crazy in the morning at rideau centre much easier
to go to movenpic and wait 10 seconds.

With the transit way handy it was easy to get around. I would really recommend the market and those apartments on the court
yard are very nice. Pricey but nice.

Preston to bronson area - Curerntly live here. Preston street is starting to reinvent itself the new development brought in a coffee shop and 2
more restaurants. Other places have started to pop up. Unfortunately for some they didn’t have a lot of time to get
a cliental before the construction and acouple have closed down. By the end of next year the major part of the
construction should be done. I suspect the preston to bronson part of carling will also be done.
You do pretty much need a car in this area for the winter. No easily accessible grocery store they are all 20 minute
walk to hartmans or the loeb in the glebe.
    - I’m hoping one day they put in a toronto style fruit/small market on preston street.
    - During the week bus service is not bad. and the train is easy to get too.

Westbourough - i never really lived here but its similar to the glebe with all the restaurants /coffee shopst etc. One extra bonus the
transit way is right there making it a lot easier to get around

Obviously, my places are very transit focused but its my main way to get around even though I have a car.

Go to Westboro, it is so nice there and New Orchard too.

    Hello Boyle,
Here is a website I check often, hope it’ll help.
    http://ottawa.kijiji.ca/f-appartment-housing-W0QQCatIdZ34QQKeywordZappartment
PS. There’s also a nice appt building in Hull just across the Alexandra Bridge, secure, way cheaper, and 5 min walk to Ottawa!

    Good luck!

  21. Roxanne Says:

    Hello Boyle,

When I was a single lady with no child, I used to live just off the Market area 100 Boteler, it’s the 2 high rise buildings as you get off the MacDonald-Cartier bridge and take the Sussex/Dalhousie Exit. It is a very clean, well maintained building, both are, far enough from the Market to not be disturbed, but close enough to walk to Rideau Centre, was at the time about a 6 dollar cab ride to Elgin Street. Has underground parking (Woo Hoo - no snow removal in the winter). It has an outdoor in-ground swimming pool with is surrounded by a brick wall so fairly private, there is a baseball diamond across the street with a tennis court. And if you can face towards the Market Area, I did, you get an awesome view of the Canada Day Fireworks and the balconies are huge.

  22. SallyO Says:

    Hi The Boyle;
Try Mark Ave with Grimes Realty…nice, two bedroom apartments built in around the 50’s with hardwood floors…really inexpensive and very close to centre Ottawa. Buses, walking or biking to everywhere very easy.
    Good luck with your move!

  23. Boyle Says:

A HUGE thank you to all who have contributed to solve my dilemma!.

As most know it is very difficult to find the “right” place for yourself!

I have read them all, blushed at some, but taken all advise, especially from those with “places to avoid”

Anything else, feel free to email theboyle@1053kissfm.com

  24. Sasa Says:

    Boyle (aka The Voice) :-D
Sorry to hear about the single bit. As for areas in downtown, I recommend you consider the Golden Triangle. It has an awesome neighborhood feel (in spite of the downtown setting) and NOTHING in town beats the vibe on Elgin Street. You will be walking distance from the Canal, the Hill, the market, etc…
    Good luck with the search!
    Cheerz!
    Sasa
