I have to agree about billboards, I think they are a much worse distraction than a cell phone. I have never been able to get used to coming around a corner and there is yet another moving billboard sign. A person either has to stop to read them or be distracted while they are driving and lets face it they are put there for us to read while we are driving. How would they feel if some one was reading a book, flipping through a magazine or catalogue while driving? to me thats the equivilent of all the billboards around our city streets.

Um... Not to be mean or anything, but you know that the hand that feeds you pays for one of said Gardiner billboards, right?

My daughter had the same experience but the ticket was on the windshield clipped onto the plastic holder that was not seen by the Parking Officer. Anyway she paid the fine and then sent a registered letter with the original ticket (keeping a copy for herself). The fine was reimbursed in a few weeks.

I have the same situation. My ticket must have blown into the corner of the dash. My daughter was there when I bought it. But I am not wasting her time as well in fighting this. I believe that they are just cash grabbing now becasue you can't request a trial date by mail. Why not? What value added info is obtained by having to go in person. They are wasting the taxpayers' maoney. They could easily set it up on the Internet or by mail. Check the box for day or night court and off you go.

I think the reason they don't just cancel the ticket is becasue then everyone would be asking other people for their ticket slips so they could avoid paying the fines. Maybe the envelope on the dash is a good idea - or a clip that holds the slip in place. When you add up the money and time spent, it isn't worth it from a financial point of view, but it IS the principle of the thing. I will fight mine. I wonder if the Highway Traffic Act or By-Law states exactly where the slip has to be placed. Maybe we should launch a class action suit?

Actually, I reacted quite differently. I have about a 45-50 min one way commute to work each day, on the red rocket. My boss told our team that if their is a strike then we should all work from home until it blows over, only coming in for meetings if you absolutely had to. Sooo... let's just say I was rooting for a strike. There were a lot of unhappy people in my office on Monday, lots of comments like "No strike, that sucks." Just a little one would have been quite nice for a lot of people I think. So when you say a "huge sigh of relief from the one-and-a-half-million commuters", that doesn't include me and many more I'm sure.

Sometimes it is these little things that can really ruin someone's day. Half of me says "Don't waste my taxpayer money and just pay the ticket -- you were responsible for displaying the ticket and you didn't, hence the fine", and of course the more reasonable side of me says "Wow, they should have just canceled the ticket when you took the time to show up", and I guess the devious side of me says "Cool, free parking! I'll never pay again, and if I ever get a ticket I'll wait for the next person to arrive back at their legally parked car and ask for their old ticket, and try and use that to get the ticket canceled" (joking, of course!).

And about the little plastic holder -- I've noticed that Volvo's seem to already have that in the windshield.

For almost a half amount of money that was paid for this "detailing" job, you could've bought multi-purpose cleaner (dry/wet vacuum cleaner) and cleaned your van all over. As thoroughly as you wish. Without appointment. Not just once - as many times as needed. For the rest of the vacuum's or van's life. All it takes - is your time. Or your spouse's/kid's/parent's time :)

Hi Helena; I went to traffic court once and experienced all the wonderful things you spoke of. At court the lady before me said her ticket was upside down in the window and the judge told her the instructions state blah blah.... So he made her pay because she didn't have her ticket facing upward.
Best of luck though.
I've decided to fight a recent fifty dollar ticket which I received for "unauthorized parking on a boulevard" outside Rosetta McClain Park in Scarborough. The 'boulevard' was cleared of snow, there were parking spots, and the gate to the regular parking is closed in winter. It looked like a parking lot to me.
I've got some great digital photos. I hope to take some more pics when the wedding parties park their limousines there this summer.
Again good luck at court.
