Lineups at Rockway Restaurant

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

A friend of mine came from out-of-town for a visit the other day and upon arriving at my place, told me there was a huge lineup of people waiting to get into a restaurant on King Street. She wasn’t familiar with the place, but said the food must be pretty good.

It finally dawned on me as we walked up the street to the restaurant that my friend was talking about the Rockway, and I immediately knew the reason for the throng.

After 61 years in business in Kitchener, the local landmark is closing its doors, its 85-year old owner, Hettie, deciding to take advantage of what she calls “early retirement.” The patrons were showing their support and appreciation of the local eatery, and were getting in one final Rockway dinner before it was too late. The place is set to close later this month, or as the sign on the door says “until supplies last.”

Thanks for the memories Hettie, and of course, the great food. Enjoy your retirement!

Never thought I could do 100km/hr all the way to T.O.

I used to regard them as freaks - drivers sitting in the right lane of the freeway, travelling at 100 kilometres an hour - an odd assortment of seniors, hard-core environmentalists in sub-compacts, or people driving “beaters” that were likely unable to exceed 100 km/hr.

Now, for the first time ever, I am one of those freaks.

In effort to save gasoline, I now sit in the right lane with the cruise control on and do one-hundred. And you know what? Not only have a noticed I and using less fuel, but I find I am more relaxed as well.

Give it a try!

Move over “Kung Fu Panda”…..outta the way “Wal-E”

I don’t have a kingdom, but if I did, I would offer it up in exchange for a quality film offering aimed specifically at adults who appreciate great movies.

Call me a snob, or just someone who falls asleep at the mere mention of a wacky animated character’s comic adventures, but I can’t remember the last time I was blown away by a cinematic offering. (Actually, it was last November, when I saw “Into The Wild.)

Heck I don’t even need to be blown away. How about merely enthralled?

Look, I know one man’s “Revenge of the Nerds” is another man’s “Shawshank Redemption”, but clearly we are not living through the return of another golden age in Hollywood. That said, I will probably break down and watch Angelina Jolie dodge a bullet by causing it to approach her in slow motion.
