New DVD releases today. Tuesday, August 19th.
Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day (8/10): Frances McDormand is fabulous as a desperate woman who takes a job as a “social secretary” for flaky Amy Adams. A throwback to Breakfast At Tiffany’s style movie making. And Adams is playing the exact same character Audrey Hepburn played in that film.
Street Kings: Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker and Hugh Laurie in a cop movie about a cop who sets out to find the killers of his former partner. Nothing cliched about that.
Prom Night (2/10): A terrible remake of the old Canadian horror film that already sucked. Other than the title, and the fact that it actually occurs ON Prom Night, the two films have nothing in common.
The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior: This is what the Rock does now. Thank you, The Game Plan.
Dexter Season Two (9/10): One of the two best shows on TV (Californication being the other one), this season is FAR sexier and just as satisfying as the first.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season One: I have never watched this. Is it any good?
The Babysitters (review coming today): John Leguizamo starts having an affair with his young teenage babysitter, who sees an opportunity to make some money and starts her own brothel. Like a Risky Business from the female perspective.
Camp Rock: A summer-camp rock and roll movie starring…the Jonas Brothers!
John Oliver: Terrifying Times (7/10): The contributor to The Daily Show comes out with his own stand-up DVD. Weak second half is more than made up for by the fantastic first half. Some hilarious British humour. At the expense of the Americans. And the British. And the Chinese.
Perry Mason: Season Three, Volume One (8/10): Amazing lawyer show from the late 50s. Still as fun to watch today as I’m sure it was in 1959.
Wayside School: Season One (8/10): Terrific kids’ show that comes with the Wayside School book attached. The book is also terrific.
Transformers Animated: Season One (4/10): Better than Transformers Cybertron. Barely.
White Tuft: The Little Beaver (6/10): Great nature filming, solid story about a little beaver who has to contend with wolves and bears in the wild. A little annoying when it comes to the “narration”.
Growing Up Wildcats (4/10): A cute Animal Planet show about lions, tigers, black leopards, and cheetahs as babies. Which is all so very cute. But really doesn’t tell us much about the animals themselves.
Growing Up Safari (4/10): Same series, also cute, also uninformative. This time - rhinos, giraffes, hyenas and zebras. Although you DO get to see a gross deluge of giraffe afterbirth.
Growing Up Arctic (5/10): Actually better than the other DVDs in the series. Walruses, penguins, polar bears and seals. A little more informative, if only because the seals are being prepared to be released into the wild, unlike all the other animals on this series.
