The Secret

April 3rd, 2008 by Charlee

The Law Of Attraction.  My rule for the boys today was no negativity about the Canucks game tonight.  Wayne got it when he said “It’s only DO tonight”, rather than ‘Do or Die’ against the Oilers at GM Place.

I went a step further by suggesting we all visualize Trevor Linden holding the Stanley Cup high above his head, whilst leading his team on a victory skate in the play-offs!

I wonder if I went too far though, when I was cutting up all the ‘not-so Secret-friendly’ sports headlines in the papers?!  My inner psycho-chick savoured it.  Go Canucks Go!!!!!!

Today on the show I promised you a link to ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Canada.  Vancouver auditions take place Monday.  Here’s what you need to know for the dancer in your family.

Have fun being a dance mom!

Tomorrow’s our Friday and I look forward to another ‘Phrase Of The Week’.  I seem to gravitate towards the slightly edgy ones!

Also on the show tomorrow, ‘Dress Destiny’.  Your zodiac sign influencing your choice of wedding dress.  I’ll share Beyonce’s star sign and dress destiny as she prepares to walk down the aisle with Jay-Z this weekend!

Talk soon.

No Joke!

March 31st, 2008 by Charlee

Seriously.  I’m not a big April Fool’s player.  Although, I DO have an April Fool’s ’surprise’ for Russ.  It has to do with another ‘cut-out’ person.  Who else will join our famous Clear cut-out collection of life-size celebrities?   Unfortunately it’s NOT Trevor Linden!

Russ’s Girlfriend Valerie!
Russ’s Girlfriend Valerie!

We have Pamela Anderson, Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart, Don Cherry, and Valerie Bertinelli who was a birthday gift for Russ from Clear listener Anne!

Also on the show tomorrow, from mail order brides to the ‘City of Brides’ in Russia.  Find out where all the women are, and why all the men are moving there!  Back home, we’ll share some smiles with ‘What It Means To Be A British Columbian’.  Clear listener Sandy thought I might enjoy this during the assimilation of Charlee back in B.C.!

I don’t have much else to say because I’m tired after today’s little birthday bash for Russ.  I feel like a mother who just hosted a boys birthday party!  Now she’s ready to  soak in a hot tub, with a trashy novel,  behind closed doors!

A beautiful sunny week ahead in Wayne’s weather for the start of April.  No showers in sight.  Just my bath!

The Lady In Red

March 28th, 2008 by Charlee

…and the gentleman with a hat.  Code for Charlee and Russ are slobs again on a Friday!  A Red tattered U.B.C. (never been there) sweatshirt for me.  A Huatulco (been in that bar) in Mexico, ball cap for Russ!

Apparently I was stylin’ though.  Clear listener Don from Maple Ridge e-mailed to tell us about Red Fridays.  ’Support Our Troops’ items in red, including sweats, ball caps and more,  are available on-line at www.redfridays.ca  and at Sears stores.   When I’m out shopping for my spring wardrobe, I’ll paint the mall Red for our troops!

Today our phrase of the week was ‘Cop An Attitude’.

Meaning

Adopt an aggressive or antagonistic bearing.

Origin

This follows on from previous ‘cop’ phrases:

Copped it - to be caught or be in trouble, recorded from 1884.
Cop a feel - to fondle sexually, recorded from 1935.
Cop on with - associate with, recorded from 1940.

Cop here is the slang term meaning ‘to catch, take hold of, pick up’. This is the most probable source of cop as the slang term for police officer incidentally, i.e. copper is ‘one who cops’.

*** Clear listener Jeff, former officer, suggests it’s as simple as an acronym.  Constable On Patrol. ***

With both ‘cop’ and ‘attitude’ being heavily used slang terms in the 1980s, it’s no big surprise that the first printed citation of ‘cop an attitude’ is from the Oakland Tribune, February 1976, advertising platform shoes:

“Cop an attitude, with altitude - dressy slip-ons… “

The nature of that reference implies the reader would already be familiar with the term. As street slang, it may well have been in circulation for some time before 1976.

Hurry Hard!

Canadian girls throw stones!
Canadian girls throw stones!
The 2008 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship ‘Rockin’ The Okanagan’ until Sunday. Canadian girls kick…or rather, throw stones! We’re the leading ladies. Tomorrow on the show, Russ and I give you an update, and we’ll bless you with the ‘Ten Commandments Of Curling’. Too funny!

I always have fun with this one on the show! Tomorrow’s ‘Phrase Of The Week’ is about the evolution of ‘An Officer and A Cop’! We’ll also give you some highlights of the Vancouver International Auto show starting this weekend.

I’m wondering if my Clear guys were hit on the head with a ‘rock’ or something?! They were talking ‘man blouse’ and singing ‘kumbaya’ ! Wayne on lead acoustic guitar, from his White Rock weather mansion, while Russ and I made lousy ‘Supremes’ on background vocals!

Here’s the link to The Mediterranean Diet’ I was talking about this morning.

Name Of The Game

March 26th, 2008 by Charlee

What does your name say about you?
What does your name say about you?
This morning we had results of a British poll revealing what your name says about you.

Russ and I didn’t see our names as ‘most likely to succeed’ but at least we’re best (and bossy) first born babies! According to ctv.ca, first born children get more attention from mommy and daddy, and they grow up to be more successful. However, more MONEY is spent on younger children in the family. Russ said “Guilt spent for lost time”. I asked “Is it too late to be the second born”? Wonder if they grow up to be ‘Gold Diggers’?!

The name is Cherry. Don Cherry. His game is talking hockey. A new movie is being made based on the life of the Canadian Legend. Who would be the ’star’ starring YOU in the movie of your life? Who hasn’t fantasized about the celebrity which we most resemble? Or wish to resemble? Russ and I do our own little ’star’ gazing tomorrow in our minds and on the streets of Vancouver, naming the stars in town this week.

The names of over 200 restaurants from White Rock to Whistler, and from Vancouver to the Valley are at www.diningoutforlife.com for Thursday’s 13th annual event. Dining Out For Life helps raise funds for local people living with aids. Pick a name and a menu. Bon Appetit!

And finally, there are celebrity names linked to American politicians! We do a family tree search to reveal which A-list celebrities are related to Senators Clinton and Obama. You’ll be surprised!

Talk soon.

The Music Is In You Always

March 23rd, 2008 by Charlee

“Wherever you are, whatever your circumstances may be, whatever misfortune you may have suffered, the music of your life has not gone. It’s inside you - if you listen to it, you can play it.”–Author Unknown–

You heard the music in me when I was just out of highschool. You shared your passion and wisdom of the music with me. You gave me my first job with music.
You mentored me wherever the music took me, and back to where it began for me.
Your last words to me on my way home, “I’m proud to have been a part of your career”.

It is I who has a career because of you.

And suddenly you are gone.
And you are back home too.

In loving and respectful memory of a true Radio Legend…
One who never thought it.
And that’s what made him so special.

I’m In ‘Heaven’

March 21st, 2008 by Charlee

…not because of my untimely ‘Death By Chocolate’, rather, after the private and intimate Bryan Adams concert last night in a CHURCH! St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church (Burrard and Nelson), Downtown Vancouver. Bryan started the show by saying “What a beautiful setting for an acoustic launch of my new album (’11′). Didn’t know they had concerts in here!”.

Courtesy of Canadian Press
Courtesy of Canadian Press

It was absolute ‘Heaven’ for me! Stained glass art of Jesus, Mary, and the Angels, above Bryan’s small stage, in front of the church pews.
Low lights, with sultry and serene hues of blue, green, red, and the (Holy) colour purple; one fusing into the other, softening the black backdrop curtain.

It was just Bryan with his guitar. Like he never became this big rockstar. So unassuming and personable. In fact, he introduced his mother to us! She was in the audience of about 300. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Bryan’s mom who had just celebrated her 80th the day before. Bryan’s brother was a birthday boy on the same day too! His entire family, with Vancouver roots still planted, was in church with us.

I’m giving so much away when I really wanted to save this for Monday’s Charlee ‘chit-chat’ with Russ. We’ll still talk it up on the show because there’s so much more to say! We’ll share a story of Bryan’s “Bad” Burnaby experience, in 1978, when he needed to get off the block! A move (with Divine intervention) which led the young musician to a place where Bryan said “I learned how to write songs”. Two years later his self-titled debut album was released.

Bryan Adams will always be our ‘Somebody’ special from this city; He’s lived in London for years, and has a villa in the Caribbean. I am truly honoured to have been invited to Bryan’s ‘Coming Home’ party for his Vancouver family. It’s my homecoming too. Charlee from the block at the same time as Bryan. I felt like his baby sister at the intimate concert! Well ok, I’m only a few years younger than he is at 48. However, after seeing Bryan Adams perform last night in church, for the first time in years for me, it was like being immortalized at “18 Til I die”!

Death By Chocolate

March 20th, 2008 by Charlee

Lovingly, by the designer desserts. Literally, for your pets. Many people aren’t aware that chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs and cats. I’ve included a link with a Q & A, symptons and treatment of chocolate toxicity in your pet. http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/toxicology/f/FAQ_choctox.htm

Symptons of chocolate overdose in Charlee? That’s a whole other list! I love dark chocolate. Susan Sierra tells me she’s a milk chocolate girl. I wonder if preference is personality related in some way? I’m sure I have a connection to the ‘dark side’! Hellooooo? Look at my blog title today : ).

Dark Chocolate Delight
Dark Chocolate Delight

I do think that Susan has a milky, silky smooth voice. She’s the nice quiet girl at Clear. Tonight however, I’m sure she’ll party like a rockstar! Susan’s married to one (musician formerly with Prism), and we’re going to see one tonight. Bryan Adams. A secret, intimate location in Downtown Vancouver for the release of his 11th studio album ‘11′.

This morning on the show, Russ and I were talking about a song on the new cd written for Ms. ‘Rehab’ Amy Winehouse, “Flower Grown Wild”. Some of the lyrics flirt with “Bars and stars, and going home to a gun”. Perhaps Bryan Adams would make the ‘dark’ chocolate choice with Charlee!

Death by Chocolate!
Death by Chocolate!

Make it a lovely ‘Death By Chocolate’ this weekend; avoid the deadly choice of Easter Lilies, (as a hostess gift too), if there are cats in the home! Spring flowers would be perfect as we welcome the new season.

The Luck Of The Irish

March 17th, 2008 by Charlee

…Or is it the ‘drink’ of the Irish that takes precedent today?! I love the ‘dark’ toasts! http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/3-15-2005-67127.asp

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Google is even getting into it with a shade of green on its home page. With Russ this morning, BLACK was the NEW green. No matter. I wore enough green for all of the boys. And I wasn’t deterred by the comment “Charlee that’s a green never seen in nature”! WHATever!!!!

Russ didn’t play ‘dress up’ with me today on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m not over it yet. Can you hear my whine as the green beer flows? Part of my charm ‘ ). Lucky charm today! I wonder if Russ will want to play ‘doctor’ with me tomorrow on the show?

Join us for:

*Interesting bits about your body parts.
*Jealousy potential relating to your height.
*Losing weight by not losing sleep.

This morning on the show we talked ‘Trophy Wives’ from AskMen.com. Here’s a link to the top 10. http://ca.askmen.com/toys/top_10_250/284_top_10_list.html

I’ll say ‘Top of the Day’ to ya’ now with an Irish toast!

Cheers from Charlee!
Cheers from Charlee!

Some may say the glass is half empty,
Some may say the glass is half full,
But the Irish will forever say
“Are you gonna drink that

All About Spring

March 15th, 2008 by Charlee

It’s not about the ‘cleaning’ part. I never succumb to worldy pressure of spring cleaning. Who became the boss of our household habits anyway? My house will always be a ‘palace of the pets’, rather than some showhome in the middle of Burnaby. I consider it clean enough if I just run the vacum once a week!

Confessions of a Diva:
The one thing ALL of ‘Charlee’s men’ couldn’t do was put Charlee’s house together again. They bravely ventured as far as to call me a slob! Can you believe it? To which I would reply “It’s organized chaos”. I don’t come home and say “What a messy house I have”, rather “Look at the evidence of what a busy life I have!”.

Spring Peaks
Spring Peaks

Yup, it’s about the spring. The Season. It officially begins March 20th. The night of Bryan Adams and Paul Potts in Vancouver. On Monday’s show I’ll call our Clear rewards winners of tix to the shows. I also make the call for that little Clear Escape to Whistler for two!

An unnamed British guy is a WINNER, after paying a pretty penny (pound!) yesterday, in a charity bid for a date with Hollywood’s Scarlett Johansson! Her new film “He’s Just Not That Into You” opens in July. More on Monday morning when I tell you the details, and you find out just how much ($) HE’s into Ms. Scarlett!

And finally…if a guy wants to dish out more than just ‘date’ money, he can buy a ‘trophy’ wife! Russ and I chat about the top 3 trophy wives according to a men’s online site. One is married to a rockstar (who’s British too!) whom we grew up listening to and still hear on Clear!

Talk to you Monday!

Even if you’re on the right track,

….yah, as I SIT here in denial of ’spring cleaning’!
