Friday Free-for-all Feb. 29th 2008

Here you go…..time to rant! What is it? The Cadman Affair? Bill Casey told me today he thinks that there was a bribe….although he says Harper didn’t try and bribe him.

It’s your turn Krystal Nation.

Enough is enough! The 16-year-old kid that killed a kitten with a golf club is in the news again. Poor baby got roughed up by the cops. Maybe he should have done what he was asked to and surrendered his belongings. What was he doing with a sawed off shotgun to begin with? Planning a robbery? Now his dimwit mother is going to sue!!! She needs a reality kick in the butt, and her son needs a golf club wrapped around his neck. Hat’s off to the fine Halifax police. Thank god we have them.

Subject: eradicating plastic bag use at superstore

Hello Andrew- here is some data to refute the nonsensical elimination of plastic grocery bags. The green bags the stores want us to buy for 1 dollar are cotton .Cotton may be referred to as “the fabric of our lives” but did you know that a standard cotton t-shirt or green cotton grocery bag requires 1/3lb of chemical pesticides and 1740 gallons of water to grow! (source: Panna / World Wildlife Federation) That’s enough water for you or I to drink for 9.5 years. Producing the pesticides uses more non renewable green house gas producing fuel than producing the plastic bags as well. It is absolute hypocracy that the tree huggers carry their green bags to the stores in their SUVs that get 15 miles per gallon while wearing jeans, shirts and jackets produced from cotton as well. Cotton requires 3 tons of pesticides per acre to grow -3 tons!!!!!. It is impossible to pontificate to me the benefits of eliminating plastic bags from grocery stores unless you are proudly wearing clothing made of hemp and happily trudging to and from the grocery stores on foot.Short of that you have been dillusinally brain washed by corporate interests interested in only decreasing costs and increasing profits while creating the illusion of doing something for the environment . Peope in fact have allowed themselves through lack of eduaction on the issue to become Patsies. I do not agree with you on all issues but am firmly with you on this one. In Regards to Mayor Peter Kelly showing up for Superstores announcement of the facade he is an embarrasment to Halifax. Each triple stacked cruise or cargo ship entering Halifax harbour burning bunker sea oil produces as much pollution per hour as 300, 000 vehicles. If the mayor supports saving the environment get cracking on harbor cleanup and impose emmission restrictions on ships enetring our harbor. Showing up to support no plastic bag use by a company that places no emmission restrictions on its trucks hauling to and from its outlets and not using solar power to offset its electric use is a massive load of hypocracy.

okay, lets say ,there was a bribe. so now Mr Cadman is in the position
to vote, for or against, the goverment. If Cadman was ,in such a position!
why did he still vote red ?? did he believe in the liberals as good gov.?
did he not have faith in the conservitives/ Harper ?
however deals and bribes are as old as parlament itself. M.P.s have
been crossing the floor for decades, only to end up with a high profile portfolio.. this may have a new twist, but its still politics at its lowest.
P.S. love the timing on the wifes/daughters latest statement. who’s she running for again ? oh yeah!!! ?
P.S.S> it scares me to know that M.P.s vote a certain way just to keep thier benifits. are we at war because of such a vote?? I HOPE NOT??

    Andrew,

I would like to toss in my two cents on something. i want to know for the love of god, why our conservative government is backing the nomination of a u.s. republican candidate this is more pro war than any candidate in recent memory. with talks of a north american union on the rise, which most canadians dont even know about, this is certainly discouraging to hear about, pending its validity. we need a government in place in the united states which is centered around a legitimate and practical exit plan and to clean up the mess that George Bush and his government that may or may not have orchestrated 9/11 have made. If John McCain is successful in his run, theres no doubt we will be invading every country that so much as ties their shoes funny to teach them the american way, and if he is backed by the tories, you can expect us to be riding piggy back to further american led catastrophy.

I was a bus rider from age 5 through 27.
While in university it took me an hour on the bus to make a 15 minute car commute. In addition, I was at one of the first stops on the route, no reason for busses to ever leave early. Every day they bus would leave between 10 minutes early and 20 minutes late. That’s 1/2 hour in the weather without a shelter every day so you don’t miss the bus.

Coming back from university I had to walk down past 4 bus stops to get to a stop that would allow me to regularly get on the over crowded bus. If you got on at the stop outside my class, you would have to wait for 2 or 3 busses before you could get on.

The day I got my motorcycle was one of the greatest days of my life, no more dealing with loud obnoxious punk kids on the bus, no more panhandlers on the bus, no people wearing so much perfume it burns my eyes or b.o. so bad that I need to vomit when I’m off the bus.

I would love to take the bus and help the environment, but not in Halifax, and never again.

    Ok,

I am a University student studying in another province. I now need to decide whether to return to Halifax or stay and make a home here. Will someone please pass this on to the appropriate powers that be. No studies need to be done. No more money needs to be wasted. I can tell you why students leave Halifax in droves and don’t come back.

Halifax is a great place to live if you feel as though you shouldn’t have to contribute to society. There is welfare, housing, free heating oil, free utilities, free food, free clothing, free dental and pretty soon “almost” free prescription drugs. Gone are the days when you worked or starved. We are creating a cycle of poverty and people who think they are entitled. I have had it and am tired of being politically correct. Get off your lazy asses, contribute and stop having children already.

To those of you legitimately on welfare or diability this shouldn’t offend you because there is nothing wrong with that.

With all this there are still squeegie kids and beggars on every corner.
Last summer I had a gentleman poke his head inside my car and ask me if he could have one of the bottles of water in my console. One squeegie kid went at my window and I politely asked him to please not touch my vehicle. He told me “relax it’s just a little soap”.

The history and beauty Halifax has to offer gets lost in the crime and overabundance of social programs.

Ok… here is why students leave:

Student = future taxpayer = person who doesn’t want to pay for all this.

    Sincerely,

Person who is tired of paying for those who are lazy.

P.S. Yeah Bruce!!! I can suggest a great place for that golf club. Someone really needs to slap his mother though as he is a product of her upbringing. My guess is she is not bright enough to understand what that means. Do you suppose I could sue her for wasting everyones time AND for imposing her idiot son on Halifax society?

This looks realy good on that 16 year old brat who had it coming to him.
Took a golf club to a kitten and now the police nailed him with a shot gun.I Would like to ask would all of this happen if his name made public and a photo of him made public?
His name and his mother name should be made pulic a photo of them made pulic and their address in where they live.
I DO NOT FEEL SORRY TO THAT 16 YEAR OLD BRAT.
He had it coming to him. So to his mommy quit your crying and deal with it. He is 100% in the wrong and start show some responsiblity.
If you can’t do your job looking after your BRAT then send him to the
    S P C A and have him put down

Here’s my beef. I am so sick and tired of hearing Richard Z. and David Suzuki talk about “Global Warming” and pollution. David just assumes he right because his eggheads tell him so and you’re just in denial if you disagree. I take point with Richard that his knowledge is indeed vast, his attitude of correctness at all costs is looming all over everything he says. Don’t get me wrong, I love Richards forcasts and his old Wonder Why show but when he talks about stuff like global warming, he seems to be quoting the same sources as David. The message is always the same.
Reduce your carbon-footprint, recycle, conserve, use mass transit, find alternate fuel sources and be aware. Not a bad message, but lately it’s getting out of hand.

I pay no attention to my carbon foot-print. I only recycle because it’s the only way the city will take my trash. I do conserve the same way my folks did, by turning off lights and turning down my heat from time to time. I’ll never use mass transit because it takes too much time and today, time is money. I’d love to have a solar generator at home but I don’t have ten grand to invest in my own wind or sun power so I have to plug into NSP’s clean-coal electricity. I consider myself an average citizen. Why then do we need to submit our society to what a few scientist believe?
When did the scientists take control?
They work for a living right?
Getting your message out is one thing. Messing with the politics of the average citizen is a real pain in the plastic bag!

    Andrew
I called in today annoyed with your guest who stated that the rural HRM residents are a burden on the municipality. I wish you could have witnessed our shotgun amalgamation. It was ordered by the late John Savage. John was a medical doctor and had many good points. He always said he “liked to get things done”. Never mind if it’s the right thing to do. Amalgamation was to save taxes through volume purchases, less administration, etc. However, there were no financial goals. For example, a trend in expenditures of +5% for year 1, 0% year 2, -3% year 3, and so on. Instead, senior administration gave themselves raises hitting the top of their salary ranges. Costs went up and never came down. They’re still going up and we have a city administration trying to dominate rural areas.

Prior to amalgamation the rural area, under the municipality of “Halifax County” was in the black. The City of Halifax was in the red. After amalgamation, rural taxes went up, urban taxes went down. How about that.

Rural residents install their own septic and provide their own water. The developer builds the subdivision roads and recovers that cost by including it in the purchase price of the lot. Paul, your guest today, should make himself aware of this making public statements on who pays for what. City administration also say that they have to provide water and sewer to rural subdivisions. Highland Park, Haliburton Hills, Westwood Hills, Harbour Woods, Island View Ridge, Hartland Village, Brookhill Estates, Wendy Brook Park, Flemming Heights, and many other subdivisions don’t have municipal water and sewer and probably never will need it, and don’t want it. But the City is trying to convince all taxpayers that they are providing it.

Yes, I pay $4000/year to have my garbage collected and I think the City is full of it.

I’m somewhat disappointed with the reaction of some listeners concerning the elimination of plastic bags from grocery and liquor stores. No matter what ulterior motives the corporations have for taking this “green” stance, it will be better for us - in the long run.
It was mentioned earlier that it takes 1/3 lb and 1300 gallons of water to produce a cotton bag. That sounds exagerated but even if it’s precise, the cotton bag can last for years and will biodegrade once discarded. Cotton can be grown in an organic fashion and water is treatable.

What really annoys me is that people are willing to go “green” only if it doesn’t demand any effort on their part. Quit your complaining, use the cotton bags and be environmentally aware of how you’re going to leave this planet for future generations.
