Good for the gal who spoke out! After 16 years in the military, sick of the politics, no promotions or pay raises for seven years, I took the FRP (Force Reduction Plan) and pursued a new career. Her husband will get it in the neck, but in the most silent/subtle way possible as not to alarm the media. At best ... if not shipped out to Alert for the remainder of his career, he will receive sub standard PER's (Performance Evaluation Reports). As far as the Admiral's comments, do you think you are going to get a straight answer from someone who is hoping for an embassy posting to Bermuda or some other sunny location. To be included in the "Old Boys Club" you keep your mouth shut and toe the line. This is evident from Hillier right on down. Although Hillier's embassy postings may be out of reach, he was told to pipe down, no doubt about it. And he complied. I agree with you that we need to support our troops better, but it has to start at the top and it is far from support from the PM's office right on down. Read today's (Dec.03) paper, pg A4 in the Herald and you will see it is only going to get worse. Imagine how many days at slow speed they will need to save fuel. Well, with the military budget, maybe the spouses will get a break and the ships will not have ANY fuel to go on future patrol/exercises.

The Military spouse is the hardest job in the world, no doubt about it Andrew. I just wish the government would stop pretending they care about the troops. Lip service doesn't cut it. Actions do. What happened to Quality of Life for our servicemembers?

Did you see the footage of the Forces recruiters in Alberta? Now there is a well thought out plan. "Lets see if we can get these $30 per hour workers to give up their job for the Canadian Forces." If clues were shoes most of the brass would be barefoot, that's why I took the FRP, never to look back. I am still very proud of our Canadian Forces. I believe we are still the best trained in the world. But we can only do the best we can with the little we have to work with. I just wish we had the backing that we should.

I think this is a topic that could use more airtime on your show.

Keep up the good work Andrew, love the show.

The rank and file in the military are constantly getting hosed like this, while the bigwigs try and justify it.

So, what if they slowed down to save money to buy more equipment? They have a budget and if slowing down saves money from that budget to put to use elsewhere like buying torpedoes, is that a worthwhile compromise?

Like any problem, you can always just answer my scenario with a "just throw more money at it" type of response, but in reality, budgets are finite and what if the sacrifice of these soldiers being two days late buys some other much needed equipment? Is that not reasonable? Should we never look to ways to reasonably save money?

I have been a ''navy wife'' for almost 20 years and do understand the ''added devotion'' that it takes to sustain the expectations of the role! I too have three children to raise, a demanding job outside the home, and a husband who's job takes him away from these shared responsibilities often enough! However, his passion for the ''navy,'' his belief in its principles, and his tenacious work ethic is very much ''who he is''and his absolute first priority is and always will to his crew and their safety! Although I too was disappointed in the two-day extension of the deployment, I know that the slower speed across the Atlantic is ultimately safer for the ship and her crew! I think as wives we have to be very proud of our own strength and inevitably proud of the crew of HMCS Toronto and what she has accomplished on this mission!
