Adventures in Lego

Lego Taj Mahal

If you’re looking for a challenge, Lego has one for you!  The toy company is launching its largest model ever - a replica of India’s Taj Mahal.  You can build the whole thing in your mom’s basement in less than a weekend.  To learn more about it, click HERE.

Reading this story got me thinking about Lego.  What’s the best thing you or someone you know ever built with the plastic bricks?  I don’t remember building anything particularly phenomenal or innovative (a reflection on me, not Lego), but I do remember the frustration of running out of pieces about three-quarters of the way through one of my “designs”.  Time to take it apart and start over on a smaller scale!  I also remember that after a while, all the bricks had bite marks because at times it could be so tough to pry the pieces apart that you had to use your teeth. :)

Looking back, Lego really was (and still is) a fun and creative toy.  What are some of your Lego memories?  Have you ever been to Legoland in Denmark, Germany, the U.K. or U.S.?  Tell us about your memories or mishaps by clicking on the No Comments/Comments link below.  Today’s Jack Nation bonus code is  EDIBLELEGO because I just know there are going to be a few anecdotes about swallowing some of the pieces.  (Do you eat the red ones last?)  The code is available until August 30th.

I can’t remember if I ever had Lego as a kid. Some of my cousins had them, but we never really made that much out of them. I would usually just make little cars out of them.
A few years ago or maybe last year, I think the CNE had the tallest Lego tower in the world. I thought it was neat that people were allowed to make their own additions to the tower and be part of the record-making process.

Carly’s Note: My favourite Lego pieces were the fir trees. That’s cool about the Lego tower at the CNE. I’m checking out the Ex this weekend. Can’t wait for the Air Show!

When I was younger, I accidently swallowed 11 pieces. The next day I pooped out a perfectly constructed lego man.

    Carly’s Note: Now that’s a talent!

I loved Lego as a kid, still do. I built the usual, and like you mentioned on-air today, hated when I ran out of a particular colour. I had to laugh while watching the male gymnasts at the Olympics. They reminded me of the human lego figurines, very compact and square shaped.
Haven’t been to any Legolands, but I was at Ontario Place the other night, at the Chinese Lantern festival - got in for free, sorry Carly, there goes your profit sharing :D - and they have a massive palace constructed made out of oriental cups, plates, spoons…very neat. I wonder how they get that sucker down.

Carly’s Note: Yeah, those eating utensils are my bonus. Glad you enjoyed them. :)

    Hi Carly,
I remember about 10 years ago my nephew asked me to help him build a Leggo space station.
We got about half way through when it got way too complicated despite following the instructions closely. I apologized to him but sheepishly asked him to get his father to help (who is an engineer). He was a little dejected and couldn’t understand why a university graduate like me couldn’t figure out how to make a Leggo space station. I didn’t have the heart to tell him i was a business major and had no aptitude for building things!
Fortunately all was forgiven and he is now at McGill studying architecture!
Have a great long weekend Carly:)

Carly’s Note: Well, maybe you couldn’t “do”, but at least you could “inspire”. Hope you have a great long weekend as well - woo hoo!
