Ice Cream Flavours

 IceCream

Elton John is the latest celebrity to have an ice cream flavour named in his honour at Ben & Jerry’s.  The Rocket Man is playing his first-ever concert in Vermont (where the ice cream giant is based) on July 21.  As a result, “Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road” will be available at Vermont locations only from July 18-25, with proceeds going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.  The flavour is described as “an outrageous symphony of decadent chocolate ice cream, peanut butter cookie dough, butter brickle and white chocolate chunks”.  Sounds decadent!

I rarely eat ice cream in the winter, but readily admit that I have it for dinner every now and then in the summer. :)  At Dairy Queen, I’ll order a chocolate dipped cone.  At Baskin-Robbins, I’ll have mint chocolate chip in a sugar cone.  If I happen upon an ice cream truck, swirl soft ice cream (chocolate and vanilla) is what I’ll have.

What is your favourite flavour of ice cream?  Do certain flavours bring back childhood memories?  Do you prefer hard or soft ice cream?  Has melted ice cream ever ruined something for you?  Share your preferences by clicking on the No Comments/Comments link below.  Today’s Jack Nation bonus code is SOFTICECREAM.  It won’t melt until July 18th.

My dad had a restaurant all through grade and high school. My fav was and still is Rum and Raisin! Yum.

Carly’s Note: Rum and Raisin, Tiger Tail, Bubblegum and Blue Licorice! Those were the days.

Butter pecan is one of my fav’s but Heavenly Hash definately takes me back!!!

Carly’s Note: Ah yes, Heavenly Hash - what’s not to like?

  3. Skippy Says:

I used to like chunkey monkey, until I heard they use real monkey.

    Carly’s Note: You’re bananas!

I don’t think I have just one favourite flavour - too many to choose from and all good! But here’s a short list and not necessarily in this order.
Baskin Robin - Pralines & Cream on a sugar cone
Good Humour - chocolate mint bar
DQ - choclate dipped vanilla cone (I’m with you on this one Carly!)
    Gelatto Fresco - raspberry
Basically, just about any good quality ice cream with loads of chocolate or caramel or both would be my choice!
BTW, I remember Tiger Tail ice cream and loved it as a kid. Wasn’t it a sort of orange sherbet with chocolate swirls?

Carly’s Note: Close on the Tiger Tail. It was actually orange sherbet with black licorice swirls. :)

I was at the Ben and Jerry’s factory in Vermont last year. Had to check it out since we were driving by. Nothing special, no factory tours that day, so we got the fridge magnet, some Chunky Monkey and drove on.
My best memories of ice cream are those old “brick” ice creams you’d get at the supermarket (and are still sold, next to all the pricey stuff). My mom would always buy Neopolitan so that’s always been my flavour ever since, if I can find it. Vanilla, strawberry and chocolate in every bite, what’s not to like?

Carly’s Note: I remember those bricks! My parents used to buy Neopolitan, too, but my brother and I would eat more of the chocolate side, so you’d end up with a whole lot of vanilla and strawberry at the end.

All you’ll eat for dinner sometimes is ice cream, Carly? No wonder you’re so skinny if that’s all you’re eating. Or did you mean to say that you’ll have it after dinner, as in a dessert?
I’ve got a bunch of favourite ice creams such as Cookies ‘n’ Cream, Rocky Road (I guess there were no French translation for this since the French side says “Savourama” LOL), Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Chocolate/Vanilla/Strawberry (or as some people like to call it, Neopolitan, but ain’t those people from Naples?). Heck, I don’t think there are many ice creams that I don’t like, except for maybe Green Tea and anything with raisins in it. I only eat raisins on their own, not inside other stuff.

Carly’s Note: No, I’ll have ice cream for dinner. :) How can you not like Green Tea? I feel cheated if I have a Japanese meal and no ice cream to top it off. Different scoops for different folks, I guess.

  7. Joe Says:

My favorite is Mint Chocolate Chip, I also like Pistachio and Bubblegum is pretty good too.

Carly’s Note: I’ll have all three, please!

  8. chas Says:

say what your doing at what i’m doing.

    Carly’s Note: Okaaaay….

Carly, I voted for you and Jeff Brown a the best show on Jack 92.5fm .
You guys rock. Your blog is also excellent.
Jeff Chalmers’ puzzles take all day to solve and are not worth the time and effort.
    Keep up the good work.

Carly’s Note: It sounds like you’re like me, Lori - we don’t challenge ourselves and give up too easily. If puzzles do indeed prevent senility, we’re in trouble!

My first job was scooping at Baskin Robbins - a dream job! (lousy pay, but a free cone every shift! And we got to meet all the local baseball teams…and Darryl Sittler used to drop by every few weeks) I tasted every flavour we ever had in stock (more than 31 at a time in our shop!).
Gold medal ribbon, Jamoca Almond Fudge, Mint chip (as a milkshake!), Pistachio (with actual nuts), Peanut Butter ‘n Chocolate were my faves…
Have to say I like hard ice cream best, but a DQ Blizzard will certainly do in a pinch!
(but no cheap no-name ice cream for this gal!)

Carly’s Note: Sounds like you definitely have some special memories from those days. I don’t know how you ever left - that’s willpower! :)

  11. Bob Says:

yeah, Rum Raisin Root Beer Float made with just a splash of vodka … you need the spoon though ’cause the raisins get stuck in the straw.

Carly’s Note: That’s a whole lot going on there, Bob. Rum and vodka - it could work as long as you don’t have to after one of those at lunch. :)

  12. Dave Says:

    Hi Carly,
When it comes to ice cream cones i prefer the soft chocolate/vanilla swirl from the trucks like you do.
With apple pie i like the harder ice cream either chocolate or vanilla.
Some of the sherberts like orange in the summer time are kinda cool too.
Do you like those ice cream sandwiches or those cones with nuts - drum sticks! Whenever i bring them over for my friends kids it’s the adults who are fighting over them!
    Have a great day.

Carly’s Note: Ice cream sandwiches take me back. My uncle used to drive a milk truck and would always come to Grandma’s with frozen treats like ice cream sandwiches and Revels. Yum!

  13. Rebecca P. Says:

Hi Carly, Thanks for the points and the excuse for getting some hard ice cream today, Pralines & Cream is my all time favorite. I used to prefer soft ice cream until some IT guys I worked with had me believeing it is an oil product that does not melt. So now it is bike to Baskins-Robbins after supper to grab a one scoop.

Carly’s Note: While it’s good to get the bike ride in if you’re going to consume extra calories, I think your IT guys are out to lunch! My understanding it that there’s more air and sodium in soft ice cream, preventing the product from hardening.

  14. Owen Says:

Hard ice cream is better by far. The 30+ flavours are there.
Can’t do much with a soft cone. (That sounded bad…. get your mind out of the gutter Carly). The only option is to dip a soft ice cream cone into chocolate to make it worthwhile (Out Carly!).
Plus, hard ice cream lasts longer (I can’t help it Carly, the innuendos just happen)
Heavenly Hash or Rocky Road were the best until Cookie Dough came out. MMMMMM Sugar!

Carly’s Note: Thanks for the laugh, Owen! :)

  15. Norma Young Says:

    Carly,
I don’t crave ice cream in the winter; but boy oh boy, let me tell you, i have it quite often in the summer,(actually too often)
My favourite at D.Q. is the reese peanut butter cup blizzard; and have you ever tried the peanut butter chocalate persuasion ice cream from M&M meats? (it’s to die for) try it….. you won’t be disapointed.
    Thanx
    Norma

Carly’s Note: Thanks for the tips, Norma! I usually stick with the chocolate dipped cone at DQ, maybe a Peanut Buster Parfait if I’m ravenous, but it’s always nice to consider other options.

  16. sandra Says:

i love icecream almost every flavor my fav flavors are pralines and cream and when i can get it(which isnt very often) tiger tail. My kids hate it cause its made with black licorice but i love love love it.

Carly’s Note: I think black licorice is a taste you acquire as you get older. I didn’t mind Tiger Tail as a kid, but maybe that’s because there was a lot more orange sherbet than black licorice swirls.

  17. Lee Ann Says:

Ah ice cream, arch-rival of my chocolate addiction. Heavenly hash, and chocolate peanut butter (Baskin & Robbins) :P YUMMO. I went to DQ the other night to get a Brownie Blizzard, but alas, I behaved and got a wee chocolate dipped cone. Wimp…

    Carly’s Note: Excellent self-control. :)

  18. Colleen Says:

Orange Pineapple… yum. It’s hard to find these days, though.

Carly’s Note: Oh, that would be good!

  19. lee Says:

Can anyone tell me where to buy Tiger Tail? I haven’t had any in YEARS !!

Carly’s Note: Good question! Anyone? Anyone?

  20. Bill Says:

Banana ice cream from the Avondale Dairy in St. Catharines. They put, or used to put, real banana chunks in to it. It was the best.
I think I need to make a trip now.

Carly’s Note: Real banana? That would be amazing!
