Are You a Winner?

PatioParty

Thanks to Kim Jones, Jack Nation member Dave Wagner’s better half, for sending me this photo. :)  Dave won the Jack FM Canada Day Patio Party at the Wolf and Firkin.  From the “sober” looks on the guys’ faces, it appears they did some “serious” celebrating in honour of Canada’s 141st birthday.  For other Firkin opportunities, check out 925jackfm.com.

It got me thinking about luck.  Some people seem to win every lottery and draw they enter.  Others, well, should probably just give up.  What’s the biggest prize you’ve ever won?  Were you able to share it with others or did you keep it all for yourself?  Share your hard luck or good luck story by clicking on the No Comments/Comments link below.  Today’s Jack Nation bonus code is HARDLUCK.  It’s good until July 9th.

    Hi Carly,
I am one of those people who wins stuff. The best prize was $2,500.00 to fly anywhere with Sunquest. Went to Punta Cana with my hubby, and it was greaaaaaaat!!!! LOL
I don’t buy lottery tickets though, except for the Princess Margaret because I believe in helping that cause.
By the way Carly, thank you so much for the 1000 points!!!

Carly’s Note: A free trip would be good. I think the only thing I’ve ever won was a pair of Leafs tickets. They lost something like 5-1. Glad I didn’t pay for those!

The Biggest thing I’ve ever won was a box of mars bars in the 70’s where the grand prize was a ski trip in switzerland.

Carly’s Note: How much did you have to spend to win that? I guess as long as you spent less than it was worth, you still came out ahead. I love it when people tell me they won $100 at the casino, but neglect to mention that they spent $500. :)

I used to win stuff through radio contests before. I think the biggest one was a scooter that we thought was malfunctioning. Turns out it just needed some new gas. I also won a framed poster of race cars that was autographed by Paul Tracy, Juan Montoya, and other drivers. I don’t know how much it’s worth but I guess a racing fan would enjoy it. There’s no letter of authenticity that came with it, so I don’t know if I can get any money for it.
As for lotteries, I think the most I’ve won is like $133, and that was years ago too. I still keep thinking that my numbers will eventually hit the jackpot, but I obviously can’t bet on that day ever happening.

Carly’s Note: I don’t play the lottery because I’m too afraid the time I forget to get a ticket will be the time my numbers come up! I guess in that case, Quick Picks are the way to go.

    Hi Carly,
I’ve been entering contests for years now and the most cash I won at once was $3,500 (and also $1,000 twice, $1,500, $2,000, etc.) but he best by far was my trip for two to New York to see a show on Broadway and we picked “Chicago” and were lucky enough to see Usher as the lawyer (as he extended his role for 2 weeks) and then his autograph on his poster after the show and we had the BEST seats in the house also!! We were at the Radisson right in downtown Manhattan, right around the corner from the Waldorf Astoria, a few blocks from Times Square and it was just perfectly located, everything was close by and within walking diatnce. Two nights and 3 days are a tease, especially if you go to New York as we can’t wait to go back again as there is so much to see!! The bus trip is worth the money as you can hop on and off anytime, get a complete tour of the city and get of in any area to eat at a cute outdoor eatery and get back on as they come every 15 minutes, definitely the way to go since taxi’s are expensive and driving is silly as there is NO PARKING ANYWHERE!!
We entered the Cancer Lottery twice and bought 3 tickets for $250 and the first time we won $100 (so lost $150) and the second time, bought 3 again for $250 and won 2 seperate times, $100 each (so lost only $50 that time) but that’s pretty lucky as they have the best odds to win in any of the lotteries!!
The first time I ever bought a 6/49 when I was about 19 for the company I worked for, I thought I’d buy 2 tickets for myself (my first tim eever buying lotto tickets), and having never played and it was the highest ever total win of over 13 million, when the numbers came on the news, I was all excited and checked my numbers and my 2 friends were with me (and also new to the lotto) and I saw two numbers first then 3 and I thought I must have won a pretty penny if the grand prize for 6 numbers was 13 million, I must have won in the low thousnads and then I checked again and saw a fourth number and screamed, I was sure I was rich, so I called the lottery number on the back to ask how much I won as I thought and so did my friends that it would have been at least $100,00, and when she said they didn’t know the exact amount yet as the numbers were just called, but she said about $75, I almost died!! This was so unfair in my eyes and I was really mad. I ended up wining just under a hundred dollars and when I told my work associates they were all glad for me and said I should be thankful and I told them that when you thought you were rich and then told under $100, it was hard to be ecstatic about it!!
Oh well, I still put aside a certain amount a month for 6/49 and Super 7 as someone has to win and you can’t if you don’t have a ticket, so I only buy one as it only takes 1 ticket to win, right, but if I ever do win big , I’ll probably be so old and in a wheel chair and won’t be able to enjoy it, LOL!!

Carly’s Note: Good point about not being able to win if you don’t have a ticket. I used to be a part of a pool at work, but I left that company. I hope they don’t win without me! Now I just focus on trying to meet rich men. Just kidding. Sort of. :)

    Hi Carly,
First of all it was SO nice to meet you on Saturday at Aren’t We Naughty. Even though it was the first time i met you i felt so comfortable joking around with you and Dayna that it was like we had been friends forever.
Anyways, i don’t usually win stuff but 2 incidents stick in my mind:
    1) Years ago i played in a charity golf tournament and they had a raffle for $10. I wasn’t feeling well so i didn’t stay for the dinner but asked my friend to check my ticket for me. i forgot about it but the next day my friend called me and said I’d won a set of golf clubs!
    2) About 5 years ago my ex-wife and i were at my company Christmas party and there were some nice prizes. She ended up winning platinum tickets to a Rangers/Leafs game and they must have been worth $175 EACH!
Regarding luck though as corny as it sounds i’m just lucky to have my health, family and really good friends who care about me. After my divorce i realized that it depends on your perspective whether you are truly lucky or not. Is the glass half full or half empty? The choice is yours how you choose to view life, eh?
Have a great day and look forward to seeing you again someday soon:)

Carly’s Note: Thanks for stopping by on Saturday. It’s always nice to meet some “familiar names”. Sounds like you’ve done well in the luck department, including health, family and friends. :) Hope the Leafs beat the Rangers that night because I also won “expensive” tickets (a relative term, I know) around that time and they were trounced 5-1. I think they were playing the Penguins, though. I can’t exactly recall. I guess I’ve blocked it out.

I won $101.30 from Super 7 recently as my largest winnings ever. I went out and bought a swing and slide set for my kids to play on. Unfortunately my 11 year old son is too old for the set but my daughters 4 and 2 years old love it! Since I have another child on the way we thought it a great way to spend the windfall!

Carly’s Note: Congrats on your new addition - the swing set and the baby! That’s a great way to spend the money. I think it’s always best to spend it on a special purchase, rather than groceries or bills, you know, unless you’re starving or they’re about to cut the electricity to your house. Then it’s probably best to keep the lights on.

  8. Nancy Says:

Carly, I’m a huge contest fanatic - been entering them as far back as I can remember (perhaps my first winning was when my drawing was picked for the cover of the Toronto Sun comic book - I think I was 10 & I won $10.00). The largest prize I won was a Simpsons’ contest re: it’s 100th episode - a trip to LA for me & 3 friends for 3 days, which included various events relating to the Simpsons (Matt Groening was present at a few of them - the whole thing was worth $10,000! Another biggie was my grand prize winning of an AC/DC contest, which included limo ride to & from the show at Skydome, front row tickets, meeting the band, all their CDs, & a platinum CD of Ballbreaker. Over the years, I’ve won numerous concert tickets, CDs, DVDs, & other various merchandise. Now I just have to win the lottery!!

Carly’s Note: Those are all great prizes! As for the lottery, I DO like your chances. You seem to be sporting that proverbial horseshoe.

I won a Billion dollars on a lottery once. Unfortunately, you never know if a woman is sleeping with you because she is attracted to you, or if it’s just because I am so filthy rich. So now I drive my old beat up car for the first couple of months, take her to my rented basement apartment,( I don’t show her my lakefront penthouse condo until at least after 10 dates) and I then know if she really likes me for just me.
Please forward all inquires to : Carly c/o Jack FM.

Carly’s Note: Good for you, Skippy! Who needs a trophy wife, anyway?

  11. April Says:

    Dear Michelle Broadhurst,
It says the name of the guy on the log in page right at the bottom, his first name is Mark, that’s all I remember though, sorry!!
    April

Carly’s Note: Thanks, April! Sorry, Michelle. I shouldn’t have crossed my fingers for you. I don’t have the best luck. :)
