How Are You Spending Dad’s Day?
According to a recent survey, we’re going to spend an average of $94.54 on Dad this Sunday (Father’s Day - yes, it’s early this year). That’s down slightly from last year, when we were willing to spend $98.34 on Dad. That extra four bucks must be going toward the high cost of gas or something.
Here’s how we’re spending that cash:
- 68.4% are buying a greeting card
- 41.4% will take Dad out
- 36.5% are giving clothing (like he needs more socks and ties!)
- 32.7% are purchasing gift cards or certificates
- 22.6% said books or CDs
- 18.5% plan on getting Dad something electronics or computer-related
What are you doing for Dad? What’s the best gift you’ve received? My dad doesn’t live in T.O., so he’s getting a card with Tim Horton’s gift certificates and a phone call of course. I don’t know what he’d say was the best gift he ever received (probably finishing the Manitoba Marathon), but I do remember making a pyjama greeting card for him out of J-cloths in Grade 2. I’m picking up the dinner tab and the others got him golf shirts.
Carly’s Note: Sounds like a good plan, as long as the old man golfs or at least dresses like he does and the shirts weren’t freebies from the Beer Store. I like freebies as much as the next gal, I’m just saying they don’t always make appropriate gifts.

My sister and I were thinking of dropping in unannounced and disrupt his quality time with his new girlfriend’s kids! Mwa-hahahahaaa…
Did that sound bitter or catty?
Ahh family! Always a lark.
And what are your plans, Ms. Klassen?

Carly’s Note: Blood is thicker then water and all that.
My dad is out-of-province, but I did send him a greeting card and a gift card and I called him Sunday afternoon. I hope to make up for both Mother’s and Father’s Day when the parents visit me next month.

I asked my 2 daughters if they could help with cutting the grass.
I really don’t need materlistic things, just my family’s love and good health. Maybe we will barbeque and spend some quality time together.
Carly’s Note: Typical dad response - just want to make sure the family is happy. Nice!

Anything golf related makes him verrrry happy.
I have a new golf shirt for him (and hopefully a Taz golf towel if I can find one) and I will be cooking him a very nice meal.
Oh and on a side note…I called him last Sunday wishing him a Happy Father’s day…now he thinks he raised a dumbass…it gave him a good laugh anyway…
Carly’s Note: You were just really early. Ask any woman, better a week early than a week late!

I remember many years ago when my daughter was about 4 years old, (she is now 29) decided to give her dad breakfast in bed. She put milk and cereal in a bowl, with a banana on the side, and put it at the end of his feet on the bed. Needless to say the cereal did not end up in his mouth, but on the bed and carpet. We had to laugh and he pretended that he ate it after he cleared the mess. Cute, but thank God those days are over! Now she cleans up those messes after her own kids
Carly’s Note: Yeah, not foresight at that age. Cute, though.

Carly’s Note: Why don’t you try it and get back to us?

We usually go to a restaurant for Father’s Day, like for lunch or dinner. I’m working on Father’s Day, so looks like it’ll be just the dinner.
It’s Saturday as I’m typing this, and I still don’t have a present for my dad, but I’ve got a few things in mind, so at least I won’t walk around the malls aimlessly.
As for me, I’m not a father to anyone I know about, so I won’t be getting father’s day presents anytime soon. LOL
Carly’s Note: I love how you left that door open, though - I’m not a father to anyone I know.

Hi Carly,
I took my mom and dad to their favorite Italian restaurant for dinner on Saturday night for Father’s Day. plus a funny card that mocked one of his quirky personality traits.
My godson surprised me on Father’s Day by giving me a nice World War 2 book about D-Day and a gift certificate from Second Cup and he’s only 7. Mind you it was his mother(my ex-wife’s sister) who bought the gifts but it was still a super nice surprise and always a treat to spend time with them.
Hoep you had a nice weekend.
Carly’s Note: Good for you for being able to maintain a relationship with your godson/nephew despite a divorce. That should be the norm, but sadly I think it’s the exception to the rule.

Hubby took his Dad to a Blue Jays game on Sunday. My dad is no longer with us, but he always enjoyed getting cards from us with instant scratch lottery tickets inside - he never won big, though.
Carly’s Note: The Jays game is a great way to spend the day with Dad. I like the lottery ticket idea, too - just as long as you let Dad sign the back.
