Whether it was a Durham cop or any other department, Abuse of Position and Power is still wrong, no matter how minor it may seem at the time, it's the end result that ultimately matters and an individual ended up dying over the action that was initially taken, he'd still be alive today if he had never taken that radar gun. Look at how many people are now suffering because of one stupid action, his children, wife, parents, siblings the list is near endless. He knew better, as did the cop that was speeding, unfortunately he paid with his life. Start treating the cops that get caught breaking the law the same way they treat other people they deal with in the same sort of scenario. Do you really think they are going to let you drive home with a warning.......He was in a position of PUBLIC TRUST AND AUTHOURITY and he blew it, now make him PAY the price just like anyone else has to, and don't forget this won't cost him a dime to defend himself, the plice union brotherhood will cover the costs, unlike the general public paying their own way.

Carly's Note: Of course abuse of position and power is wrong. I was just trying to be accurate, that's all.

Years ago I remember watching the Canadian version of "COPS" (To Serve and Protect) and this one guy was speeding home from his girlfriend's house somewhere in Vaughan - I believe the excuse he gave the officer who pulled him over had something to do with an unplanned bathroom emergency.
The officer held up the young driver by checking out his credentials all the while the guy was holding his gut almost in tears.
I really felt for the guy - but also learned a very important lesson ;)

Carly's Note: See? And you just thought you were watching the show to laugh at other people's misery.

Well Well Well, it's about time that they started prosecuting these officers to the fullest extent of the legislation, but I seriously have my doubts that will ever happen. More than once I have seen these upholders of the "LAW" fly by me like I was standing still at highway speed. Make an example of him and let his union try and protect him, the CROWN should prosecute him to the fullest, and if he happens to loose his job over it, or get a serious demotion, then "TOUGH LUCK", stick it to him the way the cops and courts drag everyone else through the system. What's with the OPP up towards Peteborough, wasn't it only 2 winters ago when another off duty officer took a radar gun home for the weekend to clock how fast snowmobile were, and then ended up getting KILLED when the snow machine ran into him. I believe it was up near Port Perry. A very sad result of someone, in a position of authority who abused that position, and paid with his own life. I'm just left in disbelief with how distorted and corrupt our system of justice has become.

Carly's Note: It was a Durham Region police officer. The incident took place on Lake Scugog.

For you Carly. Short skirt, big tears. Unfortunately wombats don't look good in skirt.
From the ticket type guys, remember that the officer is looking for a confession so they don't have to go to court.
Do you know why I pulled you over?
No.
Honestly you don't it might be for speeding, it might be because a woman in your type of car just robbed a bank, or a broken tail light, or to get your phone number.
Do you know how fast you were traveling?
No, I was keeping a good distance to the vehicle in front of me and going with the flow of the traffic.
Honestly you don't know, your speedometer is only an estimate. Show you were being a conscience driver.
Be semi surprised you were going as fast. Really this Lamborghini can go that fast?
Standard stuff after that, be nice, they are just doing their job, you may still get a ticket, but it may be far less of an offense, and cheaper.
Of course you could just soil yourself and use the old "I was trying to get to a bathroom" line.
Wombat
m^*^m

Carly's Note: Good advice - not the skirt and tears, the other part. :)

Hi Carly,
The only speeding ticket i ever received was up north about 10 years ago on a business trip.
The highway went from 90 to 50 really quickly as you entered a small town.
The cop pulled me over so i said that i wasn't from around here(which was true) and that i was late for an appointment(also true). He knocked it down to 10km over the limit so i wouldn't lose any points but still gave me a ticket.
Another time about 20 years ago a motorcycle cop signalled me to pull over on the DVP so i did as instructed. The next thing i know he got an emergency call and sped away leaving me with no ticket.
After you've been driving for a while you learn where the traps are.
Sorry i don't have any interesting excuses.
Have a great day.

Carly's Note: It's always nice when there's a bigger emergency somewhere else and it doesn't involve you.

I usually drive just below or slightly above the speed limit on the highway or anywhere else, for that matter, so I doubt that I'll ever get caught speeding. However, if I'm ever caught speeding, I'll use the excuse, "I was trying to keep a safe distance ahead of the car behind me." :-)

Carly's Note: I like that one! That must be the excuse Charlene is not sharing. :)

You could always use one of those radar detectors that do not emit a signal.
No I have not triedy one.
You could also stick on them Dancing Disco Dan ( he is in Jeff Chalmers blog)Carly's Note: I'll have to look into that - triple D, not the detector.

Carly,
This was the FIRST time I was ever pulled over and I was only going 10 -15km over the speed limit but the reason was I felt sick and my home was pretty close to my work and I knew I was going to throw up, so I told the officer that it was my first time ever and would it take long because the reason I was speeding was due to the fact that I felt sick to my stomach and was afraid I was going to be sick. Well, Quebec cops aren't too nice and he took so long that I wish I had of puked on his shoes when he brought me the ticket, that would have been JUSTICE!!!
April

Carly's Note: If you were that sick, you probably shouldn't have been driving. :) I definitely would have opened the door and puked. When I'm nauseous, it just has to come out, then I instantly feel better.

Hi Carly: I drove in from Kingston once and it was 2 a.m. and I had been driving for 4 hours. I guess I was driving alittle too fast and was stopped. I told him the truth, I had to go pee and I had passed all the open gas stations and needed to get home NOW. He said, "be on your way miss". I would like to see that cop again, I would buy him a coffee. Janice

Carly's Note: I know the gas stations were closed in your case, but ever notice how all the service centres are clustered together and then there's nothing for hours? Now I try to stop before I have to go - preventative measures.
