Beijing Olympic Uniforms

The Canadian 2008 Olympic uniforms have been unveiled.  They were designed by HBC (which is also where replicas can be purchased should you so desire) and are made from eco-friendly fabrics, including bamboo, organic cotton and coconut.  (Click HERE to see more pieces.)

The clothing seems a bit “busy” to me and no wonder - in addition to Canadian colours and symbols, the uniforms incorporate the 5 aspects of Chinese astrology (earth, wood, fire, water, metal) and the lucky number 8.  They also feature UV protection, four-way stretch and odour resistant and cooling properties.  That’s a tall order for one outfit!

I hope the athletes are happy to wear them because what you’re wearing can affect how you feel.  I cringe when I think back to Grade 8 basketball and the terrible polyester uniforms we were assigned or our poor Canadian military showing up in the desert wearing forest camouflage.

What do you think of the gear?  What’s the worst uniform that you ever had to wear?  Let us know what you think by clicking on the No Comments/Comments link below.  Today’s Jack Nation bonus code is BADUNIFORM.  It’s valid until May 3rd.

Uggh! Those duds are hideous! Maybe it’s a subconscious ploy to distract the competition and throw them off their game.

Carly’s Note: Yeah, or lose their composure from laughing uncontrollably!

    OMG - what coincidental timing!
My middle school is having a reunion this weekend
    - the ‘bad uniform’ was the girl’s gym uniform from Gr 7 and 8 (sometime in the 70’s)…a blue cotton ‘onesie’: elastic waist, buttoned front. Sort of like a short sleeved shirt with the shorts attached. My mom even embroidered my name on it - I could have died of embarassment…
But then again, everyone had to wear them…even the tough girls!

Carly’s Note: A onesie? Okay, that takes the cake!

Holy Pijama Batman, do they come with eco friendly paper bags to wear too?

Carly’s Note: KAPOW! (That’s a fist in the eye - which is what these get-ups are to me.)

I agree that the uniform looks a little too busy, especially the clothes on the guy in the left side of the picture.
And is that a man or a woman in the top picture? I honestly can’t tell. The face looks like a man’s and so does the chest, but the arms look like that of a woman’s, and they’re also wearing nail polish. They could’ve gone with a simpler design on that shirt too. Maybe just stick to the Maple Leaf and the green and red stripes on the sides and that would’ve looked better.
But as far as bad uniforms go, I don’t think I’ve ever seen as bad a uniform as the Ottawa 67s in the Ontario Hockey League. Hideous, just plain hideous: http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=3lkhr8puc3k05spnd844q3msg

Carly’s Note: I have to disagree with you, Louie. Yes, the 67s jerseys are bad, but I think the Canucks jerseys from the 80’s (the ones with the V-neck) were worse.

    Hi Carly,
When i was in high school our football jerseys were green and white which was fine but they were made out of this polyester material that didn’t stretch at all so it was super hard to get them over our shoulder pads and they didn’t breathe at all and felt terrible on your skin. When you combine this with how terrible football equipment smells once the season gets going we were a pretty miserable bunch. It translated into mean football players though and we won 2 championships while i was there. I think those jerseys should belong in a landfill though!
    Have a great weekend!

Carly’s Note: Can’t put them in a landfill - they would pollute the earth! :)

  6. RKF Says:

the “busy” red jumpsuit looks like pj’s to me….then again they would keep me awake!

Carly’s Note: I think you just solved the mystery behind them - they’re comfortable and yet they keep you alert.

  7. Jose Enrique Manuel Jesus Ricardo Gonzalez Montabalm Says:

I like the one the guy in the top photo is wearing.

Carly’s Note: Yeah, except given the nailpolish, I think it’s a girl. :)

  8. Lucas Tam Says:

I hope the competition doesn’t sign:
    U.G.L.Y.
You ain’t got no alibi you ugly
    Eh! Hey! You ugly!

Carly’s Note: Wouldn’t that be the equivalent of kicking a man when he’s down? :)

  9. Rosco Says:

I will not be buying them.Bad choice.

Carly’s Note: Now we know what to get you for your birthday!

  10. Louie Says:

You didn’t like these Canucks jerseys, Carly? http://www.classicauctions.net/Default.aspx?tabid=263&auctionid=17&lotid=431
Yeah, I guess they could be considered unattractive in today’s society, but at the time, I thought they were pretty cool. One of my classmates even wore that jersey to school.

Carly’s Note: I no longer wear leg warmers or stirrup pants, it’s true, but I thought these jerseys were bad even back then. Thanks for the pic!

Re: The girl/guy inthe top picture - would you bring that home to meet mom? Hee Hee. By the way the canadian athlete’s uniform is “made in China”!Wow, what a day and age this is! Oh well, maybe it will all be over soon.

Carly’s Note: At least “Made in China” makes sense for these games, unlike the 2010 Vancouver Games merchandise.
