Strange Foods
Strawberry Cheetos, anyone?
There are some strange flavours out there. I realize that much of it is regional - if you’ve grown up dipping your fries in mayo instead of ketchup, it doesn’t seem that odd. (In fact, give it a try sometime and you’ll see that it isn’t half bad.) On the topic of fries, I remember ordering my first poutine when my family moved to Quebec City. I was shocked at how delicious fries with gravy and cheese curds could taste. But I digress…
There are some flavours, though, that really leave you scratching your head. There was the turkey and gravy soda at Thanksgiving a few years ago. Huh? What? Yeah, see the element that makes those two flavours great together is the fact that they’re both piping hot, which is not the way you would normally drink your pop. And now Frito Lay in Japan brings you… Strawberry Cheetos! I could maybe see it if the strawberry were a seasoning, the way the cheese is. But if you look at the picture on the bag in the photo above, it appears that the strawberry is a coating. Yum!
What bizarre flavours have you been exposed to? Maybe you’ve created your own concoction that sounds strange, but tastes delicious. Have your say in the reply/comments section below.

My dad and I used to get up at the crack of dawn to go fishing-I made a quick breakfast-peanut butter and jam, toasted for me and …yuck-peanut butter and ketchup for him-One morning, half asleep, I bit into the wrong sandwich…been eating them ever since…lol
Carly’s Note: I’ll take your word for it.

Ew… the graphic alone looks gross…like Pepto Bismol spilling into your belly. Ew.
Carly’s Note: Good comparison! It DOES look like Pepto Bismol.

Sometimes I fill my mug up halfway with coffee and add a scoop of butterscotch ripple ice cream. It’s awesome. Vanilla ice cream works just as well. There’s nothing gross about it. Though I have received facial expressions of discomfort when certain family members find out I put mayo in my grilled cheese sandwich. It actually tastes pretty great…though as that great chef in Ratatouille kept driving home — “Anyone can cook.”
Carly’s Note: Thanks for sharing your java float recipe. There are coffee shops charging $5 and more for drinks like that.

My wife mixes mayo, ketchup and pepper and eats it with her french fries. Yuck!! She says it’s good, but I am not trying that. I’ve had Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, they are a bit spicy! But, boy are they good! I haven’t seen them here, only in the states. You gotta try them!
Carly’s Note: Your wife isn’t alone. Mayo and ketchup is like French or Thousand Island dressing. I use it as a dipping sauce for beef fondue. I’ll look for those Cheetos on my next trip Stateside!

I remember the”Hostess orange and grape flavoured chips!!!!” EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! Did the Japanese invent them too, in an extreme moment of boredom..???
I love concocting foods. Or, as my ex use to say” What the hell are you building??” Try peanut butter, and tuna (packed in water), on whole wheat bread!! Strawberries, and organic peanut butter…DELISH!! Sardines, and honey mustard on bread!! I’m not making this up. Honestly, when we wuz young ‘un’s, we wuz pour, so we just invented our own samiches with what we had!!
What REALLY grossed me out as a kid tho, was, my mum use to make my dad”headcheese and red onion” sandwiches for his lunch!!! Thank God for Listerine back then!!
So, does my spelling and or grammer here, make ya want to squirm Carly??? LOL!!
Susan.
Carly’s Note: Thanks for the laugh, Susan! I’ll take your word on the sandwiches and stick with what I know.

1st thing I thought of was the grape chips. And I think they were $.25 back then. I heard about a weird meatball recipe lately, stewing the meatballs in grape jelly & heinz chili sauce. I hear it’s great.
Carly’s Note: The meatball recipe sounds like it could be a version of sweet and sour. I’d try it, but I’ll pass on the grape chips.

A sidebar to my post from yesterday, Tara, yes I do remember those as well…god I feel old. Speaking of *urp* weird foods. My friends ex-husband used to eat hot dogs with peanut butter…I heard the tale of this funky combo at many functions, but never believed it was true, thought it was an urban legend, until I saw it for my own eyes. Deeeesgusting.
Carly’s Note: Not only does that sound like it would taste gross, the visual would be disgusting as well.

My dad used to try new foods all the time stating you just never know he could be on to something.
Some of the worst that I remember:
Molasses on Spaghetti (with the sauce as well)
Blueberry Jam and Bologna Sandwiches
YUCK! Although I do remember eating my share of bacon bit and mayo sandwiches which some people thought was odd
Carly’s Note: Bacon bits and mayo sound good to me - add a slice of tomato and some lettuce and you’ve got a BLT!
