Top 10 Drinking Songs
AskMen.com has published the Top 10 Drinking Songs, i.e. songs that are not only entertaining while you have a few wobbly pops, but also contain a drinking reference or two. Here’s the list:
- KISS - Cold Gin
- Sublime - 40 Oz. to Freedom
- Snoop Dogg - Gin & Juice
- Semisonic - Closing Time
- The Doors - The Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)
- Garth Brooks - Friends in Low Places
- Jimmy Buffet - Margaritaville
- George Thorogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer
- The Beastie Boys - Brass Monkey
- AC/DC - Have a Drink on Me
I would have to add Billy Joel’s Piano Man to the list. There’s the line about the old man making love to his tonic and gin. Also, it’s an awesome tune to sing along to, especially if you’re hearing it performed live and you’ve had a few pints.
Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo by Tracy Byrd is another one of my faves. The lyrics pretty much describe my relationship with tequila:
I walked in. The band just started.
The singer couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.
Was on a mission to drown her memory but
I thought “no way” with all this ruckus
(chorus)
But after one round with Jose Cuervo
I caught my boots tapping long with the beat
And after two rounds with Jose Cuervo
That band was sounding pretty darn good to me
Then some stranger asked me to dance
And I revealed to her my two left feet
Said, “Don’t get me wrong - I’m glad you asked
But tonight’s about me and an old memory”
(chorus)
Then after three rounds with Jose Cuervo
I let her lead me out on the floor
And after four rounds with Jose Cuervo
I was showing off moves never seen before
(bridge)
Well around five or round six
I forgot what I came to forget
And after round seven, or was it eight?
I bought a round for the whole dang place
(chorus)
And after nine rounds with Jose Cuervo
They were countin’ me out, an’ I was about to give in
And after ten rounds with Jose Cuervo
I lost count and started counting again
(tag)
One round with Jose Cuervo
I went two rounds with Jose Cuervo
Three rounds with Jose Cuervo
(Guys talking and joking)
Go on and get me another one, whooo
Five, or was it four
(laughing)
Four or five, yeah!
Six rounds with Jose Cuervo
Eight rounds with Jose Cuervo….
Yeah, I sense a rematch coming on this weekend and I already know who’s going to lose…

I wonder how many other people are going to reply to this blog with the following:
One Tequila,
Two Tequila,
Three Tequila,
Floor!
LOL
Carly’s Note: Sounds like my weekend!

Captain Jack by Billy Joel. It’s either about rum or heroin. Either way you can’t help but belt it out when you’re on your “special island”.

Hey Carly. What about the Rovers’ Wasn’t That a Party!
Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin (for the none beer drinkers).
Could have been three or four six-packs, (that’s for Jeff)
I don’t know, but look at the mess I’m in,
My head is like a football (for the superbowl), I think I’m gonna die,
Tell me, me oh me oh my,
Wasn’t that a party?
Someone took a grapefruit and wore it like a hat,
I saw someone under my kitchen table, talking to my old tom cat,
They were talking about hockey and the cat was talkin’ back,
Along about then everything went black,
But wasn’t that a party?
I’m sure it’s just my memory playin’ tricks on me,
But I think I saw my buddy cuttin’ down my neighbour’s tree,
Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin.
Could have been three or four six-packs,
I don’t know, but look at the mess I’m in,
My head is like a football, I think I’m gonna die,
Tell me, me oh me oh my,
Wasn’t that a party?
Old Billy Joe and Tommy, well they went a little far,
They were sitting in my backyard blowing on the siren in somebody’s police car.
So you see, your honour,
It was all in fun,
That little bitty track meet down on main street,
Was just to see if the cops could run,
Well, they run us in to see you,
In an alcoholic haze,
I can sure use those thirty days to recover from the party.
Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin.
Could have been three or four six-packs,
I don’t know, but look at the mess I’m in,
My head is like a football, I think I’m gonna die,
Tell me, me oh me oh my,
Wasn’t that a party?
Carly’s Note: I had forgotten about that one! Excellent addition to the list.

just want to add one,
Garth Brooks, Friends in Low Places, great one if you had a couple
Carly’s Note: It’s on the list! Great tune.

Hey Carly, I can’t believe “Tubthumpin’” by Chumbawamba was not on the list….! LOL.
“P*ssing the night away…
He drinks a whiskey drink, he drinks a vodka drink, he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a cider drink….”
Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off by Joe Nichols
Two Pina Coladas by Garth Brooks
I Drink Alone - George Thorogood.
Tim
Carly’s Note: You know your drinking songs, Tim. I bow to your expertise.

how aboot Suicide Solution by ozzy osbourne
Carly’s Note: You can’t argue with “wine is fine, but whiskey’s quicker”!

Jack will have their own list of drinking songs on this blog.
Don McLeon - American Pie
“Bye bye miss American pie
Drove my Chevy to the levi but the levi was dry
And good old boys were drinking wisky and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die”
How could this not be song in a bar?
Carly’s Note: You’re right - the booze references qualify and it’s one of those tunes that everyone sings along to - sober or drunk.

I instantly thought of Spirt Of The West’s Home For a Rest. A somber begining into a rockus beat. Like most good drinking nights.
KSS
Carly’s Note: I wouldn’t say somber, maybe subdued. And yes, I usually end up black and blue after that tune, the way some drinking nights turn out.

It’s 5 O’Clock somewhere by Jimmy buffet and Alan Jackson.
Marty Stuart’s Tempted and Whiskey Ain’t Working Anymore………Country but great tunes!!!!!!!!!!
Carly’s Note: I agree, and I’ll add What’s Made Milwaukee Famous by Jerry Lee Lewis while we’re at it.

This is probably the only time that I will ever agree with Jeff Brown - but I think he’s right, Spirit of the West’s Home For a Rest should be #1, head and shoulders above the rest. I’d missed the source reference when I listened to your show earlier, and assumed it must be an American list. I didn’t think they’d know about Spirit of the West. Really surprised that a Canadian website wouldn’t include them on the list. I’ve never heard of that Kiss song before.
Carly’s Note: Where’ve ya been, girl? “Cold Gin” is an awesome Kiss tune.

Hey Carly,
How about Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett, it’s 5 oclock somewhere
Carly’s Note: A few votes for that one, including mine!

Hi Carly,
For those that can remember the 1970s, there was a little band from
England called Foghat, they rocked & boogied like no other band (and
they continue to rock to this day—definitely worth checking out—for those
of you born in the 1970s or 1980s, I highly recommend looking into their
music, you will hear their influence in a lot of young bands today)…you
may know their anthem, “Slow Ride,” but their catalogue of music is rich
with a multitude of incredible rock songs…
And, one of the best songs was a little boogie number called,
“Chateau Lafitte `59 Boogie,” one of the best drinking songs of all time !
“Oh what a night, sure had a real good time…you drank your whiskey, I
drank my red wine…”
Thank you for indulging me with a little music history…you will be amazed
with what you will find if you dig deep into the depths of music history, you
will discover some great finds and fascinating anecdotes…enjoy !
Keep up the great work, Carly…and, thanks for keeping Jeff in line !
“Slow Rider”
Carly’s Note: Thanks for sharing, Slow Rider!

From the eclectic vault.
White Lightnin’ - George Jones
An old drinking song that began Here’s to the Horses that pull the budweiser (I think the rovers did this one on the same LP as Wasn’t that a party)
And a tribute to Jeff.
Too Drunk to Fish - Ray Stevens
Carly’s Note: You know it’s bad when you’re too drunk to fish…

Hi Carly . I would have to add ” It’s five o’clock somewhere ” to the list.
Carly’s Note: Good call!

Carl:
You don’t mind if I call you Carl, do you..?? (I’m kidding.)
This may sound a little late,(which it is…),and a little..different.
Thought I’d also mention:
“A bottle of red,
a bottle of white,
Whatever mood your in tonight.
I’ll meet you any time you want,
at our Italian restaurant..”
Billy Joel.
Also, a favorite movie of mine, and tremendous music piece,
(The) “Day’s of wine and roses”!
Starring, Jack Lemmon, and, Lee Remick.
Now. If I can only remember what the hell brought the last part into mind??
Susan.
Carly’s Note: It’s all good, Susan. Think of the blog as a stream of consciousness thing.

PS… If ya ever want to booze it up some night on the town…I’ve got the “BEST DAMN TEQUILA,” this side of the sombrero!!!
Carly’s Note: Thanks. Good to know!

Also in piano man “The piano sounds like a carnival and microphone smells like a beer” I always thought Margaritaville was a good drinking song. Also George Thorogood’s “I drink alone”
Carly’s Note: Couldn’t agree with you more!
