Cloverfield Disappoints

Cloverfield

I saw Cloverfield, the J.J. Abrams flick, over the weekend and was sadly disappointed by the movie.  If you haven’t heard anything about it, click HERE to view the trailer.

The concept is kind of cool - the “disaster” is documented by a guy who is filming goodbye messages for a buddy moving to Japan - but if you had a hard time keeping your layered butter popcorn down due to the unsteady camera work in The Blair Witch Project, this is not the movie for you (especially if you get there late and have to sit in the front row).

The movie is only an hour long, but it feels much longer.  I was making a grocery list in my head during the whole opening scene, where everyone’s talking about how Rob slept with Beth (how 90210).  The special effects are fairly decent, with only a few unintentionally laughable moments, so if you definitely want to see this film, I would recommend taking it in on the big screen.  Mind you, if you wait to rent it, you’ll feel less ripped off when you turn it off than you would walking out of the theatre.

Was there a movie you were looking forward to that left you sorely disappointed?  Have your say in the comment section below.  Today’s Jack Nation bonus code is LETDOWN.  It’s valid until midnight on January 22nd.

I remember seeing the original teaser and thinking to myself - Wow, finally a company that knows how to tease an audience, rather than just summarize the whole story. Too bad the movie doesn’t live up. Oh well.
The new Indiana Jones flick comes out this year - let’s hope it was worth the wait!

Carly’s Note: I’m a huge fan of the original three, so I’m a little nervous about this one. Same goes for Rambo IV.

When I went to see ” There Will Be Blood” on Saturday there were warnings posted at the AMC theatres about how Cloverfield might give you motion sickness. There’s a real enitcement…NOT !!
There Will Be Blood was a big letdown. Much too long, odd plot twists, but I have to admit, the ending wasn’t too bad ( in a sick kind of way). BUT, not good enough to want to waste over 2 1/2 hours of my life again.

Carly’s Note: I agree. There Will Be Blood was too long and although Daniel Day-Lewis is a talented actor, I felt he was overacting in this film.

    Carly,
There are many reasons why I don’t watch movies at the theatre any more. Price and lousy plots are among the top. With the admission price, I can peruse the aisles of the Home Show, Boat Show, Sportsmen’s Show or whatever else is on at the International Centre or the Direct Energy Centre and feel better afterwards. It’s just as entertaining if not more.
As a writer, I have a problem with many aspects of todays movies. The lead character nowadays is named Special Effects. Soon every movie will be computer animated and we won’t need any real actors to feed millions of dollars to. They all act like robots, anyway.
    There’s my two cents. :)

Carly’s Note: Some astute observations, Mike. I agree. Sometimes it’s better to spend your hard-earned cash on an activity with a guaranteed return.

Hey Carly, I read on CP24’s news ticker last night that during the movie Cloverfield people were actually leaving the theatre feeling queasy
from the jumpy camera work. So from that and your critique, I think I’ll wait for the DVD.

Carly’s Note: I heard that, too. I didn’t see anyone leave. Mind you, I was in the third row because it was that packed.

Hi Carly, prob. a little late to add my comment, but in case anyone’s reading…I found the Blair Witch Project to be a whole lotta hype over nothing. Found it really stupid, I was amazed to find so many other people thought that it was scary. Guess they didn’t go for walks in the woods very often…

Carly’s Note: I thought it was interesting. I liked how it was more psychological than anything else. I can also imagine how frustrating it would be to walk for hours and keep coming back to the same spot. The ending is kind of lame, though.

Seeing Cloverdale with the wife was not a good time. She has to put motion sickness patches on when we take a plane…you cloud imagine her excitement when she realized the type of movie it was. I agree with Mike…I guess buyer be ‘ware!!
FYI, you guys rock at Jack. It’s about time we had some good lookin’ ladies in radio!!

Carly’s Note: Thanks, Vito! You made my day. :)
