Best Horror Movies

Shining

I wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard horror movie fan, but while wasting time at work today I stumbled upon a website devoted to the genre.  I’ve always enjoyed the type of film that doesn’t have a lot of blood and guts, but does get your pulse racing by screwing with your mind.  I was pleased to see that my favourite film, The Shining, made the Top 10 of their Top 100 Horror Movies.  I’ve seen the Kubrick flick numerous times, but my heart is always in my throat when Danny’s in the maze.

Click HERE so you too can waste time at work checking out the Best Horror Movies, then use the reply section below to have your say.  Your bonus code for today is SHINING.  It’s worth 100 Jack Nation points and is valid until January 11th.

I agree that a good horror film will mess with your head, rather than resort to a splatterfest of gore and guts. Too many directors/filmmakers seem to think shocking an audience with gore is the same as scaring them.
I haven’t seen the Shining in a loooong time, but I’ve recently read the book which was loads of fun. Great suspense. (From what I remember, though, they are VERY different.)
If you want to create good horror, write characters that the audience likes and can relate to, then put them in credible danger. Bang, instant thrills!
I could rant forever on this topic, but since it’s your blog I’ll stop now. ;)
    Cheers!

Carly’s Note: Stephen King is one of the best. I haven’t read The Shining, but found Firestarter, Christine, It and Thinner quite gripping.

    Hey Carly,
I like almost any horror as long as they don’t involve anything to do with
    pokeing anything into the eyes.

Carly’s Note: I have teeth issues. I once read a Hitchcock short story where they pulled out the guy’s teeth. Still haunts me.

    Hi Carly:
I read The Shining before the movie came out and being a Stephen King fan, I was disappointed with the performance of Shelly Duvall. I thought her performance was pretty tepid compared to her character in the book. But what do I know…

Carly’s Note: Have read lots of King novels, but didn’t read The Shining. I thought Duvall was very convinving as the mousy wife, but then I had nothing to compare her portrayal to.

I guess I represent the opposite viewpoint, I thought the Shining was absolutely ridiculous and Jack Nicholson highly hammy instead of scary. My favourite horror movie would be “Aliens” - I’ve seen it several times but still jump (and kinda scream) whenever the “Mother” pokes her head(s) out. Plus Sigorney Weaver is kick-ass awesome as the heroine. Most horror flicks still portray women as victims, so it was great to root for Ripley.

Cary’s Note: Excellent point about women in horror films. Too few Ripleys for sure.

BIG horror movie fan. But, I agree with Sally. ‘The Shining’ was just a little too on the cheesy side for me. The only thing hat did scare me in that movie was the twins at the end of the hall!!!(you know what I mean…)
I’m a huge ‘Steven King’ fan as well. I loved the movie ‘Thinner’ and the book and movie, ‘Pet Semetary.’ My cat’s name is ‘Church.’
Give the original B&W 1963 movie, ‘The Haunting’ and, the Canadian made movie, ‘The Changeling’ a go if you like creepy ghost stories. One more good one is ‘Ghost Story!!’
    But, don’t watch them alone…

Carly’s Note: I forgot about Pet Cemetary - good call!
